Heart Disease is the Number 1 Cause of Death

Staying active is a key factor in preventing heart disease. Here are some suggestions while at the office.

  • Brainstorm project ideas with a co-worker while taking a walk.
  • Stand while talking on the telephone.
  • Walk down the hall to speak with someone instead of phoning.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Or get off a few floors early and take the stairs the rest of the way.
  • Walk while waiting for the plane at the airport.
  • Stay at hotels with fitness centers or swimming pools and use them while on trips.
  • Participate in or start a recreation league at your company.
  • Form a sports team to raise money for charity events.
  • Walk around your building for a break during the work day or during lunch.

And, of course, come to Lifestyle Fitness every day before or after work.

Month 2

I’m not much of a New Year’s Resolution guy, but I know there are many who are. Regardless of the reason, whatever gets people off the couch and started on a healthy lifestyle, I’m all for it.

But now the tough part comes for the New Year’s Resolutioners and anyone who is approaching the completion of the first 4-6 weeks of a fitness program: staying motivated. If you are still on track, good for you. Keep it up, but don’t stop reading because what I have to say next applies equally to you as well.

If you have found yourself falling out of your routine, don’t throw in the towel. There is still hope, but it does require effort on your part. The people I see who have the most success in their health and wellness journey are those who make the commitment and stick with it, no matter what comes up.

I wish, for one moment, you could see what I see every day. I am so encouraged by those who have made fitness a way of life. No matter what comes up, they manage to fit in some sort of activity and are careful about their food choices.

I am also encouraged by those who are in the midst of a challenge and are determined not to let it take them down. The challenges are many: diabetes, cardiovascular disease, joint replacements, cancer, job loss, aging parents, kids in college. The list goes on. What an inspiration to see them motivated by something bigger than themselves that pushes them to overcome their challenges.

We all (yes, even your great staff) experience motivation issues on occasion. It’s a normal and natural part of our human condition. Don’t let it keep you down though. Make yourself a priority.  There are few things more important than taking care of yourself... just ask someone who hasn’t!

As a member of Lifestyle Fitness you have at your disposal one of the most advanced facilities in the area with state-of-the-art equipment and trainers to help you every step of the way. Take advantage of our knowledge and experience to get you back on track or to keep you on track. We are happy to help you. It’s what we do!

Remember: maintenance is easier than reconstruction! If you’ve gotten off course, get back on now! Not next week, next month or next year. Come see us today so we can get you back on track.

Here’s to a successful month two!

Nutrition 101

It's not all about exercise. A healthy lifestyle also involves a basic understanding of nutrition. There is so much information that it can be a daunting task to learn and keep up.

We are happy to welcome nutritionist Brittany Simmons to lead a discussion on nutrition. Nutrition 101 will cover label reading, portion control, effective grocery shopping, the best choices to make when dining out as well as myths and misconceptions.

This class is FREE to members and only $10 for non-members.

Member Profile: Ted and Kathy Fediw

Kathy has been a member since April 2006, and Ted joined in 2007.

“The fitness center we were going to was over-run by kids and teens. Coming to Lifestyle was a breath of fresh air... plenty of space and machines with lots of help from the staff. The locker rooms are beautiful and everything is clean, fresh, friendly and comfortable.“

Kathy "My goal is to live long enough to be a nuisance to everyone I know. Ted says so far, so good! My other goal is to exercise when I’m traveling, especially when I’m on the road for work.

Kathy works out on the treadmill and/or arc trainer 3 to 4 times a week, takes classes twice a week and takes Tai Chi classes once or twice a week at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church.

"I’m stronger than I was before, my balance is much better and so is my endurance.  And I can lift my own luggage into that overhead compartment!"

Ted Ted’s goal is to maintain a strong heart, and try to lead as healthy a lifestyle as possible.

Ted alternates days between cardio and strength. If he cannot make it to Lifestyle, he plays basketball or golf.

"I've lost two inches off my waistline. Most of my jeans no longer fit!"

Kathy and Ted both love to travel. Kathy also enjoys nature walks and painting. Ted is a basketball and high school football fan.

Keep checking the wall, new workouts are being added all the time.

Try a new one, or go ahead and tackle one you haven't felt ready for. We'll help you, just ask.
