MAINTENANCE IS EASIER THAN RECONSTRUCTION

Welcome to 2011! The years seem to come and go so quickly these days, don’t they? Regardless if we are ready or not, it’s here so lets get it started in the right direction, shall we?

First let me say I’m not a New Year’s Resolution kind of guy. I believe in starting points but they don’t just have to be at the start of a new year. Resolutions can happen any time, however most people think of new beginnings at this time of year. If you are one who makes resolutions at this time, let’s get them down on paper and plan your success.

This is the year that you and Lifestyle Fitness are going to make a difference in your life. If you have health and fitness goals, I know of no better place for you to be than right here with us. You have experienced one of the best health clubs around and we are only getting better.

This year we are working harder to bring even more workout choices to help you reach your goals. Last year we created the Grab ‘n Go workouts, the self-directed workouts you can just grab and go workout. This year we’ll have some weight loss challenges and additional programs that will help keep you on track and prevent boredom.

There is something we need from you however. We need your full commitment to your health and fitness. If you are going to achieve the goals you have for yourself you have to be committed to the time and dedicated to the process. You are the only one that can achieve your goals.

We are here to help you but we cannot do it for you. You can forget about surgical procedures, magic pills and mystical products (can you say Shake Weight!). They just don’t work for the long haul. As soon as you stop doing those things, the weight comes right back. It takes a lifestyle change for those changes to become permanent.

Many of you have heard my soon-to-be famous quote: “Maintenance is easier than reconstruction”. It’s so true. The effort required to maintain what you have is so much lighter than the effort to reconstruct. Once you understand those concepts you are on your way.

Reconstruction involves getting your body back into the shape you want. Maintenance is keeping it that way. Most of you can testify how hard reconstruction is. That’s the price you pay for the days, months & years of neglect. That’s why it’s so hard.

So for 2011 decide to get yourself back in shape so you can get on a maintenance program. It’s something to look forward to.

MEMBER PROFILE - Stacy Brooker

I had a hip replacement in November and knew I needed a place to rehabilitate.

Lifestyle feels like home, people treat each her like family. The people at Lifestyle  "get it"... they have made fitness a lifestyle and it shows.

I want to cross train. jog, walk and bike. I want my hip to be stronger than it ever was and to be able to hike in the mountains.

When I joined I had to use a walker, two weeks later I went to a cane, a week later, no cane. Although I was making progress, Scott pointed out that I was walking hunched over due to tight hip flexor muscles. He showed me some stretches and helped me straighten up. This was a turning point for me. Then Shannon gave me several hip strengthening exercises to do and I have seen amazing results.

I enjoy making healthy, comforting meals for my family. I have a mill and grind my own grain to make bread—it makes me feel so pioneerish!

MEET THE LIFESTYLE STAFF

Whether we are cracking the whip on some poor soul or folding towels, you see us day in and day out, but do you really know us? We like to know about you, our member, so it's only fair that you get to know more about us.

Take a short break to read the bios below. We'll introduce the core staff in this edition and will continue to spotlight our class instructors in upcoming newsletters.

Scott Bauer I was born into a military family, which explains my penchant for pain! I lived in different states and countries, finally settling in Brownwood Texas. I attended Texas A&M for 6 years earning my Bachelor's and Master's degrees. Upon graduation I worked for Phillips Petroleum and then Amerada Hess for 20 years in a Human Resources function. Becky and I will have been married for 26 years at the end of this month, and we are blessed with two wonderful daughters—ages 22 and 19.

Ken and I met at church. We discovered we had a passion for fitness and started working out together, and then decided to become certified personal trainers.

We saw many adults struggling to better their health and fitness but having a difficult time getting good help in a place where they felt comfortable. We decided to open Lifestyle Fitness Center so adults could finally have a place to workout that was clean, friendly and conducive to achieving goals. We have been helping adults for six years and I enjoy the many relationships and friends I have made. It was worth the leap of faith it took to create this facility. We care that you are here.

Milli Myers I was a competitive gymnast throughout junior high and high school and have always enjoyed exercise. I was working out at the Y when Ken and Scott started training. I hired Ken as my trainer because I was tired of doing the same things over and over.  As soon as they opened Lifestyle I joined.

I became a personal trainer because I love helping people achieve their fitness goals, whether it be losing weight, training for a 5K, or to look good in a backless dress! I believe every fitness program, no matter what the goal, should include cardio, strength training, flexibility, and balance exercises

Ken Crowell My passion for fitness began about 20 years ago when I was a corporate employee with a high stress job, a long commute, and was a new father. I learned first-hand how crucial it was to balance my health and fitness needs with my other life obligations. Balance can be done and it does make life better.

I have an Engineering degree from UCLA and spent my first career with a major oil company. I became a Certified Personal Trainer 12 years ago and made a permanent career change about 8 years ago when Scott and I decided to create and open Lifestyle Fitness Center.  My hope is that through Lifestyle we can teach others the benefits of correct exercise activity and healthy eating habits. When these are incorporated into one’s everyday lifestyle, the quality of life can improve significantly, through better health, pain free movement, more energy, and improved feelings of wellbeing.

Although born and raised in Long Beach, California, I have lived numerous other places and have resided in The Woodlands for 19 years. I have been married for 25 years and have two daughters, ages 17 and 22.

Tina Parish After being a stay-at-home mom for ten years, I decided to pursue my passion for health and fitness and make it my career.

I discovered the power of consistent exercise and a healthy diet following the birth of my second child in my late thirties. I made exercise a central part of my life and I felt like a new person. I started running and completed my first half marathon in 2007 at age 40 and was hooked. I went on to become a cycling instructor and have been teaching for over two years.

Last year I completed my Personal Training Certification. My goal is to help people take the path less traveled and become more balanced, strong, and athletic as they move into the second half of life.

Shannon Dobyns I enjoy working at Lifestyle Fitness Center because the staff is great and the environment is ideal for personal training. The facility is clean, modern, and stocked with great equipment. I really could not ask for more.

My education includes a bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston as well as professional training certifications from NASM and ACE. I have over 16 years of experience in weight/fat loss, weight/muscle gain, corrective exercise, core training, heart zone training, fitness assessment testing, endurance sports training and military fitness training.

I believe that the fitness results you seek must be earned. Basically you must work hard to get into shape which allows you to "work harder "... to get into "better" shape.

Amber Hardy I earned a Bachelors degree in Exercise Science at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and have since become an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer. Watching my clients achieve their fitness goals is the most rewarding part of the job. I enjoy challenging clients of all ages, including pre and postnatal fitness.

Outside of training, my priorities include my faith, family and friends. I plan to pursue my masters in occupational therapy.
