In the last newsletter we gave you a 5-step process to help you succeed in your health and fitness goals. In this newsletter we are going to expand on Step 1.

The key component to a successful program is consistency. The best intentions won’t do it. Hopium won’t work either. You can’t sign up for a program and HOPE it works. You have to do what it takes to reach your goals.
That’s where most of us fall short. We have good intentions and really want to do it but we allow too many other things to get in the way. Allow me to get into your head for a moment— If you really want to do it, why don’t you? There are probably a half-dozen things you’ve done that you really wanted to do, so you know that when you want to do something, you can. So what’s stopping you?
I believe it comes down to a lack of planning and follow-through. Everything you’ve accomplished most likely involved some form of planning, whether formal or informal. Those who are most successful usually arrive at the gym the same time each day they work out.
Try this for the rest of the month: write the time you plan to exercise in your calendar on each day you will be exercising. Treat it like any other appointment you would make and show up!
Allow yourself to be important enough to make it to your Top 5 Gotta Do List for the day. If you do some soul-searching you’ll discover that there are few things more important than your health. Don’t wait until you start losing it before you move it up on your priority list.

A lot of your favorite foods can be modified to make them a better choice. Your adult beverage is no exception. If you don't drink alcohol we certainly aren't suggesting you start, however we encourage you to be mindful of the hidden calories in your favorite drinks. Here are some suggestions on how to trim a few calories.
Margarita
Most of the calories come from the store-bought margarita mix. Instead, mix tequila, fresh-squeezed lime juice and Triple Sec to make your own version. Calories saved: 70 per 6 ounces.
Mojito
Sugar adds to the taste, helping release the mint flavor. It also adds to the 145-calorie count. Instead, use a sugar substitute which contains virtually no calories, yet enhances the mint’s flavor during the muddling process. Calories saved: 80 per 6 ounces.

You've heard the quote "Variety is the spice of life". I don't think they necessarily had exercise in mind, but it applies just the same.
Adding an exercise class is a great way to spice up your routine. Lifestyle offers a wide variety of classes that are appropriate for exercisers of virtually all levels. Class descriptions can be found on the back of the class schedule or online in the Calendar of Events section.
Learn more about one of our newest classes, Zumba, in the article below and start adding some spice to your workouts.
Zumba was originally developed by a fitness instructor in Colombia who forgot his aerobic tapes one day. With his class arriving he had no choice but to grab his personal music – which happened to be Latin dance rhythmns – and improvise. It was a huge success!
ZumbaŽ combines Latin rhythms and easy-to follow moves to create a fun, calorie burning workout. The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat.
Zumba was added to our class line-up because we want you to enjoy working out while improving your fitness. According to one of our members “I never even look at the clock during class!”

Zumba, like all classes at Lifestyle, is offered free to our members.
