The Madison Avenue Diet
|
How did you ever live without Chicken Flautas from Taco Cabana,
Southwestern Egg Rolls from Chili's or that new dessert from Applebee's?
Why
does America have a weight problem? Could it be the clever boys and
girls on Madison Avenue whose sole job is to create demand for the
latest electronic toy, the newest car, that hot new menu item?
Buyer beware! That old adage applies to food too. You may say "Sure I
know that new pasta bowl from Dominos isn't a health food, but how bad
can it be". Recently Ken Hoffman shared the goods on the Italian
Sausage Marinara pasta bowl: 1460 calories, 52 fat grams 194 carbs!
We
are not advocating a life of deprivation; in fact, that is a sure way
to fail on a healthy eating plan. So if you still want the pasta bowl
make it an occasional treat, but only eat a small portion and share the rest with a friend. Enjoy the foods you like but control how much you eat.
The
best advice is to be an educated eater. Use the Internet to learn the
nutritional information of those special treats. You may find that you
don't want them that much after all.

Keeping Your Commitment - Part 3
|
In our April newsletter we talked about how easy it can be to "fall off
the workout wagon" when you go on vacation.
There
really is no reason why vacation or travel has to interrupt your
routine. You may not always have a fitness facility available but
that's no excuse. Try these ideas:
- Bench Dips: any chair or bench will do
- Cardio Burst: using the bottom stair, climb up and repeat that motion with each leg for one minute
- Push Ups: if you don't want to get on the floor, use the wall for standing push ups
- Weights: water bottles work great for front and side raises, a suitcase for bicep curls
Before you leave on vacation, come talk with us. Together we can come up with a plan to keep you active while you're having fun.

Plan and Succeed
|
Many members tell us they fail when they don't have a plan.. we know a cardio workout day can be a dismal prospect unless there is a specific challenge or you have a planned activity. That is one reason our Mt. Everest Challenge was so popular.
We hear you. That is why we developed the Grab 'n Go Workouts. We have de signed specific workouts for the treadmill, Arc, bicycle and weights. There are basic, intermediate and advanced workouts. As one member told us "40 minutes on the Arc sounds awful! But with Grab 'n Go I only have to think in 10 minute segments and before I know it, I've hit 40 minutes!"
Come in, grab one and go!
