Small Changes... Big Difference

There are several components in a healthy lifestyle, but few impact us more than food. We know we should be a little more judicious about what we put in our mouth, but sometimes we are caught unaware.

Well no more! You may not be a regular at Chick-fil-A but a lot of what you will see here can be used at other restaurants or in your own cooking. Simple substitutions or omissions can decrease the "damage" of some foods.

Let's take a look at the Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich and see how small changes in the way we order can make a big difference.

Order your sandwich without butter and save 30 calories and 3 grams of fat. You can swap out the regular bun for a wheat bun for a slightly healthier option. Be careful with the condiments however. Adding mayo to the sandwich adds needless fat and calories.

If you find that you must have some type of dressing on your sandwich, honey mustard, light mayo or ketchup are some lower calorie options to consider.

How to Stick with Your Goals: Determination

How does one stay on the journey of a healthy lifestyle? You know you need to eat healthy and exercise, but how do you maintain these habits for life?

Determination. Make up your mind to make wise choices, one choice at a time, one day at a time. If you look at the rest of your life and consider all that you need to do to stay well, it may be overwhelming. Live one day at a time and make your choices one at a time.

One choice at a time - no one forces you to eat that donut, no one makes you sleep in and skip your morning workout. Each time you are faced with a choice, consider the consequences. Eating one donut or skipping one workout won't condemn you to a life of ill health; but remember how easy it is to skip one workout, then another, then another, and eventually say "I'll get back into it after...."

When faced with the choice of sleeping in or working out, make the choice that will provide the positive consequences to continue on the journey you have begun.

Make good choices easier
  • Don't keep the pantry stocked with chips and cookies; only buy them once in a while for special occasions.
  • Don't schedule activities that may interfere with your chosen exercise time. Then you don't have to choose one activity over another.
  • Keep the refrigerator stocked with healthy fruits and vegetables. (Whoever invented the pre-cut, pre-washed carrots should get an award!)
  • Commit to exercise with a friend or family member. It makes it easier to keep your appointment with the gym.
When you do make a choice you later regret, remember that it is only one in a string of choices you will face the rest of your life. Just remember your determination and make a wise choice next time.
