CELEBRATION OF WOMEN'S ROWING

Sunday morning ninety women met at CRI to row together in eights, quads, and doubles in lineups that mixed former US national team rowers with CRI rowers from every program including Row Boston, military rowing, and adaptive rowing as well as a sizable group from WeCanRow. We all came off the water with wide grins and a feeling of wonder at how quickly a pick-up lineup can come together.
This was the third year the event was held. It began as part of CRI's 25th celebration as a way to thank and honor the women's national team rowers who were among those who pushed for opening competitive rowing to women in the early 1970's, who were among the founders of CRI in 1985, and who continue to inspire us in our training even today.
The second purpose of the event is to introduce women from across all of CRI's programs to each other and to some of the women they see on the river every day. After the boats were returned to their racks, we met upstairs for a rowers brunch and a chance to make new friends from CRI and the former national team members and learn more of their stories. An autograph or two might have been collected.
Many thanks to the volunteers, both men and women, who shopped and prepared the brunch, cleaned up afterwards, figured out lineups, took photos, and kept us safe on the water. We're already beginning the planning for next year!

RRRRUMBLED..... Vets and Adaptive Crews
2012 Rumble on the River
|
CRI's Military Sweeps Crew and Adaptive Crew rowed strong and enjoyed the fun in the 2012 Rumble on the River. The Military Veterans populated 2 8+s along with a couple of their passionate volunteers. Hard work paid off as a First Place win for one of the military vet boats, while the second boat secured a 6th place win in the Head Race.
The Adaptive Crew was composed of 6 men and women , assisted by supportive volunteers both on land and water. Individual adaptive rowers singly and in doubles sprinted swiftly and 2 women with double partners put together robust performances in the Regatta Head race. Two of the adaptive rowers who competed were military veterans: Martin Buckley (U.S. Army) rowed a single, and Frank Nagle (USCG) rowed a double with Ken Hoffman (U.S. Navy) in the bow. Many of these rowers got their first taste of competition and were congratulated by 2012 Olympic Bronze Medal Rower Natalie Dell as she presented the awards.
These crews and coaches express sincere gratitude to their tireless volunteers and devoted parents and supportive family members.
