CRI Rowers Back from Club Nationals

The athletes, coaches and chaperones have returned from the 2012 USRowing Club Championships after a long week of competition and a lot of hard work.  With over 1,426 crews and 2,100 athletes competing for national titles, this year was the largest field in the history of the regatta. CRI headed down to Camden, NJ after only 2 ½ weeks of summer session practices with over 90 entries.  Medals were awarded in both sweep and sculling events and in all available gender and age classifications from under 16 juniors to seniors.  In addition to the national titles medals that our athletes earned, the CRI women's team came in 2nd place in the overall women's team points standings with 120.5 points behind Vesper Boat Club who won the overall women's team trophy with 155 points.  The CRI men's team earned 27 points overall. The racing started on Wednesday morning at 7:30AM and ran an average of one race every seven minutes until the last race crossed the line just after 7:30PM each day.

Scullers at the Prouty
Raising Money to fight Cancer

A contingent of CRI Scullers were a strong presence at The Prouty over the weekend, raising a combined sum of $2154.

"Row the Prouty" which took place on July 14th on the CT River in Hanover, NH, is a fundraising event to benefit cancer research at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center.

Participating in the event were three singles and two doubles.
The single rowers were Lynn Salmonsen, Barbara Goldstein and Carol Krauss. The doubles were the father/son team of Mike and Dave Hyde, and Rony Sebok and Pat Hambrick - each rowing and amazing 10 - 16 miles for a great cause.

Congratulations to you all, we are proud of you!!
To Our Chaperones
We Thank You All!!
Dear CRI Community: For those who were not in Camden NJ to experience our gallant efforts in the US Rowing Club National Regatta, I would like your attention for the next 30 seconds.  This message of gratitude is directed to any & every volunteer parent chaperon who helped to make this regatta a success.

Dear boys and girls chaperones,

Thank you for the extra-ordinary work you all put-forth this past week.   Conditions were challenging, and the days/nights were long.  From sunrise to sunset (and beyond) your efforts are greatly appreciated by me, our fellow coaches, and the athletes.   Your steadfast and humble dedication (i.e the sweat, the organization, the planning, the cold drinks in extreme heat, the kiddie ice pool with cold wraps, the Gatorade, the constant care for us, and the consideration for all aspects that help us optimize our performance efforts) is greatly appreciated.  There's no doubt that CRI is a special place.  It's largely due to folks like you and the effort you put forth that we are able to continuously provide the athletes with memorable and meaningful youth athlete experiences.  Thank you.

Sincerely,

The CRI Summer Comp Team Coaches

Third Annual Celebration of Women's Rowing
Sunday, September 23rd

SAVE THE DATE - SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 - THIRD ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF WOMEN'S ROWING

The tradition continues.  Please plan to join us on Sunday, September 23 for the third celebration of women's rowing and to thank women's national team members who led the way to make women's rowing widely available.  We'll put together mixed line-ups at 8:30, row and scull together, and enjoy each other's company at brunch.  It's a wonderful, fun morning.  All CRI women - junior and senior - as well as CRI men who support women's rowing, family and friends are welcome.

If you can help plan the event and/or help on the day, please email Jane Morse at: jgmorse@morses.net

CRI "Fireside Chats"
Women's Comp Team

Members of the Women's Comp Team convened at the Brookline home of Cam Sutter on the evening of July 9th for the fifth in the series of CRI "Fireside Chats".  These informal socials, hosted at personal homes, are a great way to learn more about your fellow CRI members as well as what else is going on at the club.

If you are interested in hosting or attending an upcoming event, please contact Tracy Smith at:tracy@communityrowing.org
CRI's Proctor Boathouse
RIP: May 1987 - July 2012

An important part of CRI's history slipped quietly away from us last week when CRI's old "Proctor Boathouse" was demolished in a matter
of minutes to make way for Wellesley College's new boathouse which will occupy the exact footprint of Proctor boathouse. For new-comers, as you row upstream from CRI's current site toward Watertown Square, look to the port side toward Daly Ice Rink and notice the fresh, new light-colored plywood building between the river and the ice rink and that's the new boathouse under construction.

CRI's 1st boathouse of its own, named after its designer Mr. Sheri Proctor, was literally a weekend-warrior project in May 1987 and, by MDC decree, should have been "disassembled no later than October 31, 1987"  yet survived under the radar until just last week, slighly longer than 25 years.

Compared to CRI's Proctor boathouse, Wellesley College's new boathouse will be luxurious with electricity, a real floor (as opposed to
Proctor's dirt floor), a far superior roof with overhanging eaves to keep moisture from the structure, several skylights, an extra rear door,
and an overall more solid construction ensuring them many years of use.

Today, all that remains of CRI's old boathouse are some of the original footings and two very weathered doors being used temporarily until Wellesley's new doors are installed later on.  I'm sure all CRI members past & present wish Wellesley College crew as much success and as many fond memories at that site as the literally thousands of CRI rowers who passed through those now rickety, old doors over the past years.

Here are some CRI archival photos from 1987 as well as pictures of the new boathouse taken a few days ago.

Daily Water Quality Color Flags
Do You Know What the Colors Indicate?

The Charles River Watershed Association's Water Quality Notification Program presents the daily flag colors of the river's health, which signify whether or not the river is safe for boating. The flags are dispayed at nine boating locations from Watertown to Boston. Water quality flag colors are updated each weekday from early July through mid-October.

A Blue Flag: indicates safe boating conditions
A Yellow Flag: indicates inconclusive data to predict possible health risks
A Red Flag: indicates likely health risks
