CRI Members Pitch in Beautifying Banks of the Charles
Earth Day 2012
Thank you to all the volunteers who generously stepped out on a Saturday morning to help with the 13th Annual Earth Day Charles River Clean Up!!

Saturday morning a crew from CRI met at the boathouse, put on bright green Earth Day volunteer shirts and hit the banks of the Charles picking up trash and debris in our neighborhood of the river between the North Beacon Street Bridge and Galen Street.

The Charles River Watershed Association kept us well supplied with trash bags (lots of them), protective gloves, snack bars and Earth Day shirts. The day was a lovely one to be by the river.

Many thanks from the whole CRI community to each and every one of you who helped out. Nice work!

Military Weekend at CRI
Military Veterans Participate in Unique Events
Military Weekend_April 2012
This past weekend, military veterans participated in 3 separate and unique events at CRI.

Friday afternoon, the Massachusetts Women Veterans Network previewed a documentary "SERVICE: When Women Come Marching Home". Thirty veterans joined together to view this emotionally charged movie and after the film, one of the producers participated in a follow-up discussion via Skype. These veterans also appreciated gaining information about free veterans rowing programs at CRI, and many look forward to participating in the May 12th "Veterans, Family, and Friends" Learn-to-Row event. Some of the women are planning to join the early T/TH morning sweeps group starting on May 20, the next novice sweeps introduction.

On Friday evening, sixteen CRI rowing military veterans brought food, family members, and pets to celebrate the "1st Annual Laura B. Veterans Sock-Burning Celebration".  Laura has been rowing at CRI since last year. She was deployed as a pilot flying search and rescue missions with what is now known as Helicopter Sea Combat  Squadron 7 (HCS-7) to Bosnia, the Persian Gulf, and other exotic hot-spots. Now a physician at a local Veterans Hospital, Laura wanted to gather with fellow veterans in a social event to kick off the rowing season. So, as the Vikings did thousands of years ago,  celebrating their safe return to their homeland,CRI vets brought their old socks to burn in celebration. CRI vets celebrated their camaraderie and their outlook for a successful rowing season.

Saturday morning, crack of dawn, twenty-seven West Point officers were treated to a "Learn-to-Row" session, aided by four CRI coaches, ten CRI military veteran rowers and ten CRI rowers from various Community Rowing programs. Reports indicate that "this was by far the best physical fitness event offered by any community group" from the past years of their annual conference.

So, the CRI Military Rowing programs seem to have started the season with a lot of rowing, consistent interest, team-building and volunteerism. Karianne Kulig is golden in her role as head Military coach.

Track Your Fitness This Season
Start with VO2 Max Testing

Are you looking for a personalized way to track your fitness this year? Start your season with a VO2 max test!

The test is a 10-12 minute, rowing specific, step test designed to measure your maximum aerobic power. This value indicates how much work you can do while remaining aerobic. If you are able to remain aerobic at a high workload, you will be able to continue to hold that pace for a longer period of time.

Tracking and training this system gives a rower a huge advantage over the course of a 1k or 2k race!  Each test comes with a one-on-one consultation with our exercise physiologists, Dr. Andrew Taylor from Harvard Medical School and Glen Picard from the ExPD program, who will review your data and make training recommendations based on those values.

Discounted tests are still available but are going quickly. Please contact Judith Vogel for more information!
