Positive Coaching Alliance Workshop

Tuesday, March 13th, 7PM
All CRI coaches are encouraged to attend!!
The Boston Foundation CHAMPS Program will present a Positive Coaching Alliance workshop as part of the CRI Coach Education Series. All coaches are encouraged to attend, especially those that work with youth, in either recreational or competitive programs.

Presentation Description: The Positive Coaching Alliance presents interactive workshops to coaches of all levels and sports by teaching three Principles; Mastery of Skills, Positive Reinforcement and Honor and Respect for the game. Coaches will be given tools and resources which support the presentation. In addition, PCA will help coaches as they seek to effectively interact with athletes, parents, and officials to create an atmosphere around youth sports which provides the best possible experience for all involved.

About the Presenters: The Positive Coaching Alliance, along with Boston"CHAMPS" (Coaches Helping Athletes through Mentoring and Positive Sports) is a sports-based youth development initiative of the Boston Foundation. Its mission is to ensure that every child in the city of Boston has access to high quality athletic opportunities -beyond school hours- including equipment, safe and clean fields, and that all youth coaches are of the highest quality and understand the fundamentals of youth development through sports. The Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), founded at Stanford University in 1998, is a non profit organization with the goal of building character development through sports, while at the same time establishing a performance based environment which produces peak performance both on and off the field.

REMINDER: Refreshments & pizza will be served at the conclusion of our presentation.

Special Note: By attending you will help to professionalize the discipline of sports coaching in the U.S., especially the sport of rowing. Moreover, attending these presentations will provide you with a better understanding of our sport and your coaching craft.  Win - Win.  We can all learn from each other.  See you there!

Four Oar Rule
Oar Rule Still in Effect
Halloween Horns

The weather is lovely, and we have all seen rowers on the river. However,  rowers at CRI, must be aware that the Four Oar Rule is still in effect until the river water warms to safe temperatures.

We will post updates on the CRI website, the boathouse lobby monitor and through the E-News when the oar rule is lifted. Until then, enjoy the weather and the river but above all else, STAY SAFE!!
CRI Has a History
Do You Know It?
Proctor
Do you know where CRI rowed in 1985?  What about 1995?  We're happy to announce the formation of a committee to document the history of CRI.

We need people to sift through archives, as well as people with ideas about how we can tell our story to others who only know the boathouse.

Team Progress/TITAN

Bryan Fuller, pictured above with his teammates in their rowing vessel prior to departing for their Atlantic crossing, has been at sea for nearly 17days.
Yes, in that boat pictured above! Amazing!

The boat,TITAN, is a light-weight 8 man ocean rowing boat. She has been designed to go after and break the "4 minute mile of ocean rowing" and achieve the ATLANTIC SPEED RECORD CROSSING in under 30 days.

Leaving from Gran Canaria in February 2012, the international crew are rowing to Barbados with the current record of 32 days to chase.

Here is the latest news from the boat:

Simon Chalk, skipper of Titan reported today how frustrated the crew are now with the weather - they have been experiencing light conditions again, and this afternoon......lots of fog!! Praying for better weather conditions to send them heading towards Barbados. The crew are grateful for all the messages which are helping to keep their spirits up - thanks to all!!

Follow the team's progress and send messages:

You can follow their progress and leave messages of support and encouragement by visiting the Titan website:

Charles River Alliance of Boaters - CRAB
CRAB's New Website, Visit Today!

CRAB, the Charles River Alliance of Boaters now has a website. Please take the time to visit the site, as it is a valuable resource for all of us who enjoy the river and want to keep it a safe place for all.

From the home page of the CRAB website:

Welcome to the Charles River Alliance of Boaters (CRAB) website. We are a coalition of individuals and organizations that use the Charles River from Watertown Square to the Charles River Dam.

CRAB organizations offer a wide range of boating experiences for all boating interests from sightseeing to Olympic training. Whether your interest is with an oar, paddle, sail, motor, or even helping to keep the river clean, CRAB organizations can provide what you need.

Our mission is to encourage safe and accessible boating by the entire community on the Lower Basin of the Charles. This includes power boaters, sailors, rowers, paddlers and others working together to keep the Charles River a healthy resource for the enjoyment of boaters and park users alike. A cornerstone of our effort is the development of better avenues of communication between and among this diverse community of users. The intent of this web site is to gather a lot of diverse information in one place that can be easily accessed by everyone who uses or wants to use the river.

CRI Parent Socials
Casual Gatherings for Parents

Romei Tagliente and Roxanne Ferreiro

New this year, Parent Socials are a way for parents new to CRI to meet other CRI parents and members in small, casual social gatherings and discover there is more to the CRI community than a fabulous boathouse with incredible coaches and athletes.

At each social one of CRI's coaches will be there to meet parents, answer questions, and talk about CRI programs and events. The first Parent Social was held last week at the home of Joe and Romie Tagliente.

These events will be happening throughout the year. If you have any questions or would like to host an event please contact Buffy at:
buffy.communityrowing@gmail.com or 617-779-8264.
Tracking Your Fitness
Begin With a VO2 Max Test

Are you looking for a personalized way to track your fitness this year? Start your season with a VO2 max test!

The test is a 10-12 minute, rowing specific, step test designed to measure your maximum aerobic power. This value indicates how much work you can do while remaining aerobic. If you are able to remain aerobic at a high workload, you will be able to continue to hold that pace for a longer period of time.

Tracking and training this system gives a rower a huge advantage over the course of a 1k or 2k race!  Each test comes with a one-on-one consultation with our exercise physiologists, Dr. Andrew Taylor from Harvard Medical School and Glen Picard from the ExPD program, who will review your data and make training recommendations based on those values.

Discounted tests are still available but are going quickly. Please contact Judith Vogel for more information!

Let's Pull Together to care for the river we at CRI love so much!!

Calling for CRI members to volunteer to assist with the 13th Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup which will take place on Saturday, April 21, 2012, from 9am - 12pm.

Volunteer groups will work together during a fun and rewarding event to enhance the Charles River. A cookout will also be offered after the Cleanup at the Hatch Shell for volunteers who would like to attend.

CRI has participated in the past, and it would be nice to lend a hand once again. Senator Brownsberger's office will work with a group from CRI providing volunteer t-shirts, supplies and snacks for the event.

We are hoping to find CRI members willing to get out there on April 21 and help.

Here is what we need:

1.) A Volunteer Coordinator - mostly just a contact person

2.) 100 Volunteers

To volunteer, please contact Nonna at:

nonna.r.gale@gmail.com
