Veterans' Day Row
CRI's First Annual Veterans' Day Row

First Annual Veteran's Day Row

Friday 11/11/11 dawned cloudy, breezy, and cool... Perfect conditions for CRI's 1st Annual Veterans' Day Row.  Thirty voices joined together in singing the National Anthem to kick-off the event, followed by remarks from Ellen Minzner, Director of Outreach.

Ellen lauded the veterans' service to our country and reaffirmed CRI's pledge of support for all military veterans through programs here at Community Rowing which offer opportunities for military veterans to experience the benefits of rowing while building connections within our CRI community.

Three Pococks pushed off the docks with 9 military veterans, 2 coaches, and 22 volunteers, backed by 3 other members of CRI staff in various supporting roles.

CRI's Military and Veteran rowing programs span the year with on-the-water rowing as well as winter training. Our veteran and military rowers are achieving increased levels of fitness, camaraderie with peers and community members, and rowing success. Two members of our early morning veterans' crew program, Gabe Sanchez and Wild Bill Jones, rowed a double in HOCR 2011. Laura Bajor and Jenna Swymeler rowed a double in the Ernestine Bayer race. Andrew "Dallas" Rosacker, a rower in our Veterans' Adaptive program, rowed a double in the Ernestine Bayer race with Ellen Minzner in bow. Andrew's sights are now set on London 2012! Bryan Fuller, a military veteran sculler, who first sat in a boat in April 2011 plans to complete a trans-Atlantic row in February, aiming for a record time of less than 32 days!

So, lots of excitement stirring in this valuable program. Come watch these magnificent men and women step out of their comfort zone to conquer the Charles River, London, the Atlantic, the World!

Be Safe - Please Watch For The Four-Oar Rule
Scullers - Anticipate Announcement of the Four-Oar Rule
Though the weather has been lovely of late, as we move further into November, and the weather and water cool, please be on the look out for announcements of the 'Four-Oar Rule' to take effect. The rule is crucial for your safety on the water.

Err on the side of caution. Rowing in cold air on cold water can be very dangerous.

Watch the CRI website, the lobby monitor, and E-News announcements for updates.
