Racing Shells at Logan Airport
A display of racing shells welcomes international competitors to Boston Logan International Airport's Terminal E
|
Welcoming international visitors coming to Boston from around the world to compete in the Head of the Charles Regatta begins when they deplane and walk through Terminal E. Working in conjunction with Logan Airport, CRI's own Kane Larin and Matt Lehrer installed for display a single and a quad at Logan's Terminal E..
The beautiful shells will greet rowers arriving to compete and will allow non-rowers a chance to see these incredible boats up close, hopefully encouraging visitors to come watch the regatta along the banks of the Charles and perhaps learn to row one day themselves.
Nice job getting the boats up the escalator!

CRI's Fourth Annual Headless Halloween Regatta
Saturday November 5th | November?.......but Halloween is in October!! True, but the Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga Springs, NY, has taken our traditional Headless Halloween weekend. Many of CRI's singles and doubles rowers will be competing at the Fish, and so would not be available to join in the fun. So enjoy the Halloween spirit for a little longer and come race with us, in costume of course, at the Headless Halloween Regatta!!
The race follows a moderately buoyed course that starts near the HOCR finish line and ends right in front of the CRI docks. We meet at 8:30am and launch at 8:35am. Racing begins at 9:00am. The race is open to all - adaptive boats, tubbies, B boats, singles and doubles. Even if you have never raced before, we welcome you!! The entrance fee is easy also, it is simply a costume and something to share at our post-race brunch. There will be several race categories and lots of ways to win prizes (Best Costume, Best Rowing Style as well as 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each category.), To sign up, email Liz Kosturko at lizkosturko@gmail.com or Lynn Salmonsen at lyns@mindspring.com. Include your name, age and 1st and 2nd boat choices or a private boat. And if you'd like to volunteer email Lynn at Lyns@mindspring.com . We will need launch drivers, dock hands, photographers and people to set up and take down brunch. We look forward to you joining in the fun. Thanks! Lynn and Liz |

Weeks Footbridge Update
DCR's Weeks Memorial Footbridge Project - Update |
Rowers: Take note of the organge highlighted passage nothing the dates and possibly tricky barge parking locations.
Power boaters: see the red highlighted passage below. the netting may prevent your larger boats from passing under the arches. You may want to warn your members who are still on the water.
As previously announced, DCR has recently initiated work on the Weeks Memorial Footbridge to repair the original limestone balustrade handrails and replace a portion of the navigational lights above each arch on both the upstream and downstream sides of the bridge. This work is expected to conclude in mid- to late-January, 2012.
Given the historic nature of the footbridge, DCR has been coordinating with the Cambridge Historic Commission, the Boston Landmarks Commission, and the Massachusetts Historic Commission.
Passage along the footbridge will be a provided through a center path on the walkway of the footbridge to maintain public access throughout the construction project.
The necessary work will be carried out from the deck, above the River, simultaneously upstream and downstream. A containment system made of netting, which will extend 6" below the arches, mid-span will be installed to prevent any debris from entering the Charles River. This plan reflects a revision of the previously announced plan, which called for sequenced arch closures and staging of a barge in the Charles River. In order to further minimize any navigational impediments, the contractor has adjusted the plan to do the work from the top of the bridge, rather than from the River.
The weekend of the Head of the Charles Regatta, Oct 21st - Oct 23rd, all work on the footbridge will be suspended. The bridge will be open for pedestrians to cross the River, but no public viewing of the races from the bridge will be allowed.
These immediate investments in railing and lighting repairs are a first step in a larger, multi-phase renovation and restoration of the Weeks Footbridge that DCR expects to unveil to the public through a public process and to commence in 2012.
*
As part of design for the larger project, inspections of the arches, including preliminary structural evaluation of the undersides, will be conducted from a barge-mounted aerial lift and a boat. Provided that weather allows, it is anticipated that the inspections will be carried out from October 31 through November 2, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., during which time arches will be blocked, as follows: on October 31, the Cambridge end arch; on November 1, the center arch; and on November 2, the Boston end arch. For the first day, the barge will be moored on the downstream Cambridge side during off hours. The rest of the time, the barge will be moored on the downstream Boston side during non-working hours.
