Weeks Footbridge Update
DCR's Weeks Memorial Footbridge Project - Update

Rowers:  Take note of the organge highlighted passage nothing the dates and possibly tricky barge parking locations.

Power boaters:  see the red highlighted passage below.  the netting may prevent your larger boats from passing under the arches.  You may want to warn your members who are still on the water.

As previously announced, DCR has recently initiated work on the Weeks Memorial Footbridge to repair the original limestone balustrade handrails and replace a portion of the navigational lights above each arch on both the upstream and downstream sides of the bridge. This work is expected to conclude in mid- to late-January, 2012.

*
Given the historic nature of the footbridge, DCR has been coordinating with the Cambridge Historic Commission, the Boston Landmarks Commission, and the Massachusetts Historic Commission.
*
Passage along the footbridge will be a provided through a center path on the walkway of the footbridge to maintain public access throughout the construction project.
*
The necessary work will be carried out from the deck, above the River, simultaneously upstream and downstream. A containment system made of netting, which will extend 6" below the arches, mid-span will be installed to prevent any debris from entering the Charles River. This plan reflects a revision of the previously announced plan, which called for sequenced arch closures and staging of a barge in the Charles River. In order to further minimize any navigational impediments, the contractor has adjusted the plan to do the work from the top of the bridge, rather than from the River.
*
The weekend of the Head of the Charles Regatta, Oct 21st - Oct 23rd, all work on the footbridge will be suspended. The bridge will be open for pedestrians to cross the River, but no public viewing of the races from the bridge will be allowed.
*
These immediate investments in railing and lighting repairs are a first step in a larger, multi-phase renovation and restoration of the Weeks Footbridge that DCR expects to unveil to the public through a public process and to commence in 2012.
As part of design for the larger project, inspections of the arches, including preliminary structural evaluation of the undersides, will be conducted from a barge-mounted aerial lift and a boat. Provided that weather allows, it is anticipated that the inspections will be carried out from October 31 through November 2, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., during which time arches will be blocked, as follows: on October 31, the Cambridge end arch; on November 1, the center arch; and on November 2, the Boston end arch. For the first day, the barge will be moored on the downstream Cambridge side during off hours. The rest of the time, the barge will be moored on the downstream Boston side during non-working hours.

Fantasy Rowing Event October 16th
Tried Fantasy Football? How about Fantasy Rowing?

Feeling a little left out of a Fantasy Football League?  Not really up on your quarterbacks?  Monday Nite Football broadcast after your bedtime?

Fear not, rowing fans!  RBC has conjured up a fantasy draft just for you based on the biggest and best regatta soon to be held on our doorstep.  You get to draft entries for your own made-up club.  It's a fundraiser for this inaugural year, so there is no big money win, but you get to draft your friends (or not), learn to appreciate your nemesis, and maybe even get schooled by someone who pays attention to those Jr. or other Masters categories out there.

So, if you think you know who is fast, and think you can draft the right entries onto your team under pressure- Join us for pizza and beer and a friendly wager for a good cause.  All at a reasonable hour that will not upset your training.

The Rules:

*Suggested donation, $25.00 or more to help RBC, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

*Unique and creative name for your team is welcome and necessary.  You can enter on your own or with partners (but if there are more of you, plan to kick in a bigger donation)

*You must be present at the event for the draft.

*As a pilot year, we're keeping it simple.  The 2011 draw will be comprised only of RBC, CBC, CRI and UBC entries on the draw list which will be made available to you when you sign up.  Late entries from the wait list will not be considered.  Sign up fast so you have time to do homework on all those entries you don't know anything about.

*Draft order will be determined by some random method (like numbers in a hat) and will be rotated throughout the draft for equity.

*all participants should follow the established traffic pattern on the River.  Because, safety is important.

*No more than 15 'clubs' will participate in a draft.  More than one draft or division will be held if necessary.  every effort will be made to make the number of 'clubs' per division equal

*the MC may place a time limit for selection.

*points are earned by each entry's finish order on race day.  first place = 1 point, forty eighth place = 48 points.  the ' fantasy club' with the lowest points wins.

*Scratches and DNF's will be assessed a point value determined by the highest, last place point assignment for any CRI, UBC, CBC or RBC entry.

*The Committee reserves the right to make rules during play, making every effort for fairness.

*Prizes for each division will be awarded after race day.

Hopefully, this event will raise a few bucks and raise awareness and appreciation of the great racing that goes on at each of the clubs.  should be  fun nite.

Now, anyone can figure out a few winners or high placing folks.  The event will get very fun when the selection gets into the weeds. Either new, never-raced-before entries like the RBC Jr. boys, or folks coming out of sweep boats into singles...unpredictable stuff like that. Folks can do their homework - look at last years finishes, Head of the Kevin results, other head race results, but very few people know who is fast in all categories.

Anyone from CRI is welcome.

Thanks!
