The Coaching Education Symposium Series at Community Rowing Inc. is pleased to host Don Siegel & David Schary (see bios below) with their presentation titled: "Coaching Fun AND Success: Making Mindful, Motivated & Thriving Athletes"
Date: Tuesday, June 8th, 2010Time: 7pm - 8:30pm Place: Harry Parker BoathouseEntrance: Open to all / $5 Abstract: Research tells us that athletes engage in sports for all sorts of reasons including to: have fun, improve skills, stay in shape, and associate with friends. We also know that participation in sports declines fairly dramatically during the teenage years. To better engage and empower children in sports, we propose that coaches can explicitly and deliberately create a team environment that enhances participants' intrinsic motivation by promoting their sense of competence and control over how they engage in, and think about, what they are doing. Specifically, this presentation will cover notions such as "mindset" (i.e. building a growth mindset), "self-efficacy" (i.e. building belief in one's performance capabilities), and "intrinsic motivation" (i.e. building reinforcement from participation itself). As well, we will attempt to show how these concepts are intricately intertwined and can impact both the satisfaction and success that athletes experience. Furthermore, we will provide thoughts about how coaches can help their athletes to sustain their level of interest over a longer time frame and during periods of waning motivation, by using sport as a medium for personal growth, rather than as a benchmark for making social comparisons. Please join us for this month's Symposium. By attending you will help to professionalize the discipline of sports coaching in the U.S., especially the sport of rowing. Moreover, attending these presentations will glean you a better understanding of our sport and your coaching craft. Win - Win. We can all learn from each other. See you there!
