Community Rowing Inc. Presents:
-----------
Coaching Fun AND Success:
Making Mindful, Motivated & Thriving Athletes

Please join us for this month's Coaching Education Symposium as part of efforts to improve the rowing community, sponsored by Community Rowing Inc. We welcome two very special guests this month, Don Siegel and David Schary from Smith College for their co-produced lecture.

Research tells us that athletes engage in sports for all sorts of reasons including to: have fun, improve skills, stay in shape, get exercise, and associate with friends.  We also know that participation in sports declines fairly dramatically during the teenage years. Seemingly, we have accepted the reasons for both engagement and disengagement as being part of the normal developmental pattern that youth follow as they transition from childhood through adolescence. However, we believe that losing so many youth from sport precludes them from acquiring the many benefits continued participation affords including, but not limited to, such things as positive identity formation, physical and psychological health, and developing the array of attributes necessary for performing at advanced levels. To better engage and empower children in sports, we propose that coaches can explicitly and deliberately create a team environment that enhances participant's intrinsic motivation by promoting their sense of competence and control over how they engage in, and think about, what they are doing.  Specifically, this presentation will cover notions such as "mindset" (i.e., building a growth mindset), "self-efficacy" (i.e., building belief in one's performance capabilities), and "intrinsic motivation" (building reinforcement from participation itself). As well, we will attempt to show how these concepts are intricately intertwined and can impact both the satisfaction and success that athletes experience.  Furthermore, we will provide thoughts about how coaches can help their athletes to sustain their interest over a longer time frame, and during periods of waning motivation, by using sport as a medium for personal growth, rather than as a benchmark for making social comparisons.
