To all CRI members, friends and family:

Join CRI and the Charles River Conservancy on Saturday, January 9th for a few serious hours of pruning! Last winter's pruning was well worth it! Let's keep working on the shores around CRI! The CRC is a non-profit organization dedicated to the renewal and stewardship of the Charles River Parklands. They work with the DCR (CRI's landlord) to help make these parklands more attractive, active and accessible. It's also a great upper body work-out and you'll get to see all your rowing friends for a few hours!

Date: Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Time:  9:00-1:00 pm. Rain, snow, or shine!

Meeting site location: Please look for the white CRC Dump truck to be parked in the CRI parking lot.

Clothing:  This event is rain, snow, or shine, so please be prepared for the weather! I also recommend wearing sturdy shoes or boots.

John Broderick, CRC Stewardship Program Director, will lead off the day with instructions for proper pruning. He will teach you pruning techniques along with how to 'read a tree' for pruning. We'll be working on the banks of the river removing invasive species and pruning trees for pedestrian and boater safety on the CRI stretch of river. As you all know this is a beautiful stretch of the river and needs constant work. It can use a lot of our help to improve the visitor and boater experience. And...help out our landlord and future relations with them.

Equipment: The Charles River Conservancy provides work gloves, tools & supplies, permits and supervision. If you think you'll need warmer gloves, bring additional liners of thin gloves to wear under the work gloves.

Lunch: Please bring a bag lunch and plenty of water, as there is nowhere nearby to get something to eat.

RSVP: Cindy Larson, rower@centrepointarchitects.comPlease let me know if you will be joining us so that we can determine the pruning strategy/priority plan and the amount of equipment needed. John can handle up to 100 people for this event and it will take that many to get the area cleared.

I look forward to working with you all on tackling this task!

Cindy Larson, CRI rower

Virtual Team ChallengeNEED A CHALLENGE?

The January challenge is here and you have until the 15th to sign up and log your meters.  As of this morning, January 3, 2010, team Community Rowing, Inc has ONLY 19 members so far and is already ranked 17th out of 185 teams that have logged January Challenge meters.  The lead team has 245 members.  We have the rowers to match any team out there, all we need to do is LOG THOSE METERS!!!  Here's how to join:

1.    Go to www.concept2.com

2.    From the "Online Tools" button, select "Online Logbook"

3.    New Users - select the Registration button on the left and provide your information.  You will be asked for your affiliation and there are quite a number of CRI affiliations to choose from.  Remember, your AFFILIATION IS NOT THE SAME THING AS YOUR TEAM FOR THE JANUARY CHALLENGE!  Existing Logbook rowers should simply log in.

4.    Join the team "Community Rowing, Inc" on the Teams Adminsitration Page.  Get there by selecting the "Teams" button on the top right of the Logbook page.  Once you select the team, Concept2 sends an email to Bob Lee, our team captain.  Bob will approve and you will get an email from CRI Team Captain letting you know you're on the team.

5.    FINAL STEP -once you are approved, go back to the Concept2 logbook page, select Teams, and click on the "Team Challenge" blue bar to join the challenge.

For people who already have a team membership in addition to their affiliation, you must leave that other team and join Community Rowing, Inc. for this challenge.  You can change back again in February.

Meters rowed each week should be entered no later than midnight on Friday of that week - (this works on the honor system) so join up and register those meters this week!
