CRI Hosts Largest Corporate Rowing Event Yet!

Last Tuesday, July 28th CRI hosted the largest Corporate Rowing Group to date!  160 people from Philips Consumer Lifestyle arrived at the Harry Parker Boathouse to learn how to row, race in Pococks, and compete in team building activities-all in a mere 4 hours! Following the Corporate Rowing Program, the group moved indoors to celebrate with a clambake, cocktails, a live band, and lots of dancing!

A huge THANK YOU to all volunteers for giving up your entire afternoon and evening to come out to the boathouse to row, cox, and help where needed during the land activities.  Despite the intense heat and dealing with so many adults who have never seen an oar before, everyone did an excellent job, staying positive, and being so patient with the various groups on and off the water.  Another enormous THANK YOU to our amazing coaching staff -- Everyone agreed the different group activities ran like clockwork because of you!.

Without our patient volunteers, dedicated coaches, and hard working full time staff this would not have been such a tremendous success!  In all, 6 full time CRI staff, 18 CRI Coaches, and 37 Volunteer Rowers and Coxswains came together to run this team building program.

Aside from this Corporate Rowing group, six other corporate groups have come to CRI this July.  This is the most corporate rowing groups we have had in one month never mind the entire year.  In fact, in the month of July we had a total of 10 corporate rowing groups. It is safe to say that our Corporate Rowing Program is growing and becoming very popular. Thanks to you!

Adaptive Rowing Program in full "swing"!
Adaptive
Every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6:30, athletes come down to the docks to prove that rowing is truly a sport for all.  CRI's Adaptive rowing program has been putting out doubles, singles, and a barge full of rowers who use slightly modified equipment to meet their needs.  Pontoons for stability, fixed seats to help with torso support, and special gloves to help grip the oar are all pieces of gear we use to get out on the water.

On August 29th, CRI is sending five athletes to the Bayada Regatta in Philadelphia, four of whom are new rowers.  Stay tuned for the results of what proves to be a strong beginning of this program.  The excitement is contagious!  For more information, contact KariAnne or Cristina at adaptive@communityrowing.org
Youth Summer LTR: 2-Week Summer Camp Update!
By Brent Bode, Youth LTR Coach

We're full steam ahead in our 3rd session (of four summer sessions) of Youth Learn to Row (LTR) 2-week summer camps.  We've had fun in the sun, and the rain!  We've had barge races, and eights races.  We've discovered how to make boats go fast while "stomping grapes," sliding slow like "screen doors," holding oars as if we're all "Captain Hook," and we've learned proper posture instead of "lazy boy" rowing.  Excitedly, we've had more than a handful of ambitious novice rowers move-up and into advanced skills after just one session!  Bravo and congratulations to all our 2009 summer participants!

REMINDER -- 2nd INVITATION
TO JOIN THE HEAD OF THE CHARLES UMPIRE CORPS

Regatta dates:  Friday, October 16th  - Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Want a great view of the Head Of The Charles this year?  Think you can ump?

The HOCR course is the most challenging headrace in the world, with narrow bridge openings, many tight turns, and lots of boats competing.  Each year a corps of 125 keen-eyed umpires observes every meter of the twisting course to insure that the Head Of The Charles is safe and fair for its thousands of competitors.  We invite you to join this terrific team of umpires in 2009.

Interested in helping?  We need volunteers with rowing experience, focus, judgment, and the willingness to invest some training time and 1-2 days "on station" to make the HOCR the best regatta possible. Please join the team.
