Cool Chord Progression

Try this: Am - G - F - E7

This is a classic chord progression used in flamenco and rumba music as well as Latin-sounding rock The Ventures - Walk Don't Run like Toussaint l'Overture by Santana. You can hear it in lots of surf tunes like in the main riff in Walk Don't Run by The Ventures.

It's an unmistakable sound, regardless of the key it's performed in. Below are a few well-known pop songs that use this chord progression. To play along with the original recordings, you have to use the chords given in order to match what they're doing; otherwise, just use the Am progression and you'll still get the same sound (because it IS the same sound)

Runaway by Del Shannon (verses: Bbm - Ab - Gb - F7)

Hazy Shade of Winter by Simon & Garfunkel (Dm - C - Bb - A7) Bangles' version: (Fm, Eb, Db, C7)

And, to an extent:

California Dreamin' by the Mamas & Papas (C#m - B - A - B - G#7)

Don't know these chords? Get the book!

Kalyn Aolani

What a lucky gal - Kalyn's over in Hawaii right now soaking up the sunGabby Pahinui Waimanalo Kanikapila and the adulation of Hawaiian music performers like Cyril Pahinui, who just had his big Waimanalo Kanikapila this past weekend. We've been getting together for about 10 months now and it's so wonderful to see her enthusiasm and motivation to keep learning and growing - I am very proud of her. New Ukulele Club/Group in Redondo Beach

We had our first meeting this past Saturday and it was fun! Room was packed with about 30 people so we may actually have to find a bigger space already - we'll see what happens.

Anyway, so we went through Jim Beloff's The Daily Ukulele book and chose the songs that exemplified a couple different strumming patterns. I always say a strumming pattern is nothing more than the groove of a song so you got to know what that groove is first and foremost. How do you do that? By listening. To that same song over and over and over again. Mute the strings with one hand (presumably left) and see if you can strum it out with the other.

Stay tuned for the scheduling of the next gathering! I was thinking first Saturday of the month but in September that's Labor Day weekend so we may shoot for the Saturday after that.

Thanks to all that came out, I had a good time!
