Greetings!

Welcome to the 2008 Accenture Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon!  We are excited to have you join us this summer in San Francisco for one of the most challenging and thrilling triathlons in the world.  In this issue, we highlight all of the greening efforts surrounding the event and how you as a participant can get involved.

GREENING ALCATRAZ

What can we do?
The Accenture Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon strives to create minimal-to-no impact on the environment during the weekend in San Francisco. We are committed to finding ways to make this event a little "greener" each year.  We not only expect the event to consider the environment but we encourage all our sponsors, vendors, and partners to minimize environmental impact as well.  This year we are asking you as participants and spectators to make your lives a little greener too - it is easier than you think!

The following are just some of the greening efforts we will implement in 2008 to make the event environmentally friendly:
  • Comprehensive on-site recycling program with trained volunteers to ensure all trash is properly disposed within the event.
  • Special Bicycle Parking and outreach to community to encourage cycling or walking to the event.
  • Re-usable athlete bags
  • Use of biodegradable, compostable, corn starch material cups from GreenOffice.com used at all aid stations.
  • Strong encouragement of all sponsors and vendors to utilize environmentally friendly products and strict use of recycling stations while on-site.
  • Support of sponsor programs and initiatives to help educate participants and spectators on how to "green" their lives to reduce their own impact on the environment.
What can you do?
An athlete's Pledge to the Planet
As participants, we are asking you to make your lives a little greener too!  With the support of sponsors like Accenture, Toyota, Clif Bar and ACORE, we want to offer you the knowledge and power to minimize your own impact on the planet.  Everyday, there are simple and easy steps you can take to make a big difference.

Through a partnership with Clif Bar and Jamis Bicycles, participants and spectators will have the opportunity to make their own Pledge to the Planet and win some great prizes including a commuter bicycle from Jamis and a cycling kit from Clif Bar.

How does it work?
STEP 1: Anytime between now and race day, visit Clif Bar online and complete your Pledge to the Planet!

STEP 2: On Saturday, June 7, stop by the Clif Bar Tent located at the Fitness Festival at Marina Green and let them know you've pledged!  Don't worry if you haven't pledged before you get there - You can also make your Pledge right there at the Clif Bar Tent.
Clif Bar will give you a temporary tattoo of the Pledge to the Planet Green Alcatraz logo to wear during race day.  Don't forget to put it on Sunday morning!

Step 3: There will be unidentified "spotters" out on the course on Sunday during the race.  Anyone seen wearing their Pledge to the Planet Green Alcatraz Tattoo will be automatically entered to win some great prizes!  Winners will be announced on the Fitness Festival Stage during the Awards Ceremony!

Step 4: Remember your pledge and start living a greener life with reduced carbon emissions!

Friends and Family can also get in on the action by visiting the Clif Bar Tent and pledging too!

SPONSOR GREENING

A Green Space
At Accenture, we are extending our focus on high performance business to include the ways in which we design and execute our own office space.  Over the course of the past year, Accenture managed office relocations in San Francisco and in San Jose.  Both locations now serve as key examples of the "greening" of Accenture.  The offices are designed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accreditation.  The open workspaces save energy and resources by making daylight more available.  Enclosed offices are equipped with motion-activated lights and furnished with equipment made from recycled content.  And, as part of efforts to manage Accenture facilities in an environmentally-conscious way, we now partner with Cartridges for Kids.  This recycling program, in turn, raises funds for Junior Achievement, a key community partner of Accenture in location across the globe.

As is evident from our core values and Code of Business Ethics, we believe reducing our environmental impact must be part of our overall corporate social responsibility agenda.  To help achieve this goal, volunteer groups of employees are forming location-based "eco teams" to work together to collect success stories, share best practices and deepen understanding of the areas that could have the greatest potential impact on reducing Accenture's environmental footprint.  Around the world, Accenture seeks to capture and share successes between locations.  We also intend to drive change through our role as a supplier and procurer of services and as an international employer. Recycle Your Energy Bar Wrappers
On January 23, 2008 Clif Bar launched the nation's first collection program for used energy bar wrappers. This partnership with Terracycle enables collectors to trade wrappers for cash to support non-profits and schools. The program is designed to reduce the amount of energy bar wrappers going into our landfills, while educating people about the benefits of reusing waste materials. Together the companies have created the Wrapper Brigade, which will donate 2 cents to charity for every used wrapper collected by individuals and organizations.

The collected wrappers will be fused and woven into a strong material, which will then be used to make backpacks, gym totes and other products. These items are expected to be available at major retailers by early next year.

CLIF Bar is sponsoring the program and TerraCycle is providing product collection and reuse expertise. Both partners recognize that millions of energy bar wrappers are discarded each year. Together they want to help make reuse rather than disposal the norm for used wrappers.

Anyone can sign up for the Wrapper Brigade program by visiting
www.terracycle.net/brigades. There is absolutely no cost to participate. Within one to two weeks after signing up, you receive four collection bags that hold 200 energy bar wrappers each. You simply mail the collection bags back to TerraCycle and designate the charity you want to support with your wrapper donation. All shipping fees are covered by the program to encourage people to collect as many wrappers as possible.

Renewable Energy to Meet 25% of US Energy Demand by 2025
Utilizing America's vast wind, solar, geothermal, hydro, biomass, and waste to energy resources, we can move towards an energy supply which is more secure, reliable, improves public health, protects the environment, addresses climate change, creates jobs, and provides technological leadership.  America needs renewable energy.

The American Council On Renewable Energy (ACORE) has released a joint report by industry trade associations, government agencies, and non-profits stating that renewable energy can meet 25% of US energy demand by 2025. A report by the University of Tennessee shows that 25% renewable energy by 2025 will create 3-5 million new jobs and spur $700 billion in economic activity.

Engines of Change
Toyota operates under a Global Earth Charter, which was enacted to promote environmental responsibility for every aspect of the company and significantly reduce the impact its vehicles have on the planet.
As an environmental leader in the automotive industry and beyond, Toyota does more than meet industry standards-the company seeks to raise them. With an unwavering commitment to environmental protection, Toyota strives to create clean and efficient products and conserve resources before its vehicles even hit the road.
Toyota's dedication to making a difference in the environment also corresponds with helping people achieve overall well-being and health-issues that are paramount to any endurance sport athlete. Accordingly, the company aligned its entire suite of fuel-efficient Hybrid Synergy Drive-powered vehicles-Prius, Camry Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid-with triathlons via the "Engines of Change" program.

Toyota's Engines of Change program was designed to help people move forward in their sport and encourage their active lifestyle by being involved with and supporting triathlons, while creating experiences that elevate the sport.

What's more, onsite at triathlons as well as on the
Toyota Engines of Change Web site visitors can do their part to protect and sustain the planet by submitting the reason why they attend and/or participate in triathlons. For each entry received, Toyota, in partnership with The National Arbor Day Foundation, will plant a tree in an endangered U.S. national forest.

ToyotaToyota
Toyota's "Engines of Change" program is designed to demonstrate and support the sense of shared values between Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) and endurance athletes both online and onsite at triathlon events. There are three key benefits to HSD, as there are three elite athletes: Sarah Haskins, Hunter Kemper and Andy Potts.
  • There's a direct correlation between the advanced technology features in the Prius that Andy Potts drives and what he needs and does to succeed on race day-all the latest gear and constant energy monitoring.
  • The Camry Hybrid's efficient and mindful use of resources works just like Sarah Haskins's own internal energy level monitoring, resulting in how she paces herself on race day.
  • There's a strong parallel between the Highlander Hybrid's powerful, exciting performance and the rush Hunter Kemper feels when passing another racer on the home stretch.
