Cold-water Training
Swimming Tip Escape from Alcatraz swim expert Joe Oakes offers this swimming tip from his book The Alcatraz Swimmer's Manual:
Cold-water training is important because the temperature of the Bay in the summer is normally in the upper 50s. There are two distinct elements to cold-water swimming. The first is the initial mental and physical shock of jumping into cold water. The way to acclimate yourself to that is to just do it a few times until the cold water on your skin is not an unfamiliar feeling. The second has to do with remaining in cold water for a long time. Our bodies obey the laws of thermodynamics and biology. The cold water will draw heat from warm skin. Sea mammals have a thicker layer of fat than humans to insulate them. You can add fat to your body, but there are dozens of good reasons not to do that. Your body will help, however. Immersing yourself in cold water often and long enough will allow the body to teach itself to draw blood inwards, away from the skin, making the skin colder and thus reducing the body's heat loss to the cold water. Some accomplished swimmers feel that it takes only a week or two to get back into dealing comfortably with cold water after a long layoff.
One of the hardest parts of the swim is entering the cold waters of the Bay. I suggest that you prepare your mind and your body for that shock by calmly taking short cold-water dips in the weeks and days prior to your swim.
Avoiding Penalties Did you know that racing with an iPod or another kind of portable music player is against USA Triathlon (USAT) rules? The last thing you want is to get a penalty, intentionally or unintentionally. Click here to read more about having a Penalty-free Race.
