"Cleantech": What's in a Word?
At SJF Ventures this summer, we have been debating the words we use for our investment strategy. After more than a dozen years, three funds and 35 portfolio companies, our strategy is more refined than ever. However, we are encountering confusion or negativity around the word "cleantech", particularly among U.S. institutional limited partners. To better articulate SJF's investment strategy and distinguish it from the capital-intensive, deep technology development and IPO-reliant 'cleantech' approach of large funds, SJF will be publishing a series of articles this fall. We welcome your feedback on our first installment which deals with the disenchantment with the 'cleantech' theme by some and how it echoes previous energytech and envirotech investment cycles.
