Vision statement

Jesus in Love supports lesbian, gay, bi trans and queer  (LGBTQ) spirituality, with an emphasis on art and literature. It promotes artistic and religious freedom and teaches love for all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. It is based on these beliefs: God loves all people, including sexual minorities. The creative process is sacred. The queer visions, especially the gay Jesus and LGBT saints, will free people to experience the divine in new ways and lead to a more just world.

Greetings!

Taste queer grace in this issue with a variety of surprising topics, including Jesus marrying a rock star and a civil rights leader voted into sainthood.

Queer grace: Beyond sex and race

Grace is Queer by Felicia Follum

Grace is a bit queer, as social justice artist Felicia Follum points out in a new poster. She is among the artists, musicians and thinkers who are shining a queer light on grace -- unmerited help from God.

Follum explores the concept of grace with a drawing of a gay friend as Jesus. Grace is also addressed by theologian Patrick Cheng and musician Richard Haxton, who celebrates a place "beyond sex and race, beyond time and space in a state of grace." More info

Jesus & Freddie: Heavenly marriage

Marriage Made in Heaven by Mr. Fish

A gay Jesus cuddles in bed with a rock star in "Marriage Made in Heaven" by cartoonist Mr. Fish.  He made the image to support same-sex marriage.

He chose Freddie Mercury of Queen as Jesus' partner because he is a gay icon and, like Jesus, he inspired many before dying young. More info

Pauli Murray voted into queer sainthood

Pauli Murray

Human rights champion Pauli Murray was approved for inclusion in the Episcopal Church's book of saints recently.

Murray (1910-1985) is a civil rights pioneer, feminist, author, lawyer and the first black woman ordained as an Episcopal priest. Her lesbian (or trans?) side is less well known. More info

Blasphemy or fresh perspectives?

Americans for Truth web page on blasphemy
Americans for Truth about Homosexuality, a conservative Christian group devoted to "exposing and countering the homosexual activist agenda," has posted an attack titled Blasphemy 101: 'Lesbian Christian' Kittredge Cherry Offers 'Rainbow Christ Prayer.' More info
St. Wilgefortis: Bearded woman

Saint Wilgefortis
St. Wilgefortis prayed to avoid marriage to a pagan king -- and her prayers were answered when she grew a beard!

People have honored this virgin martyr since the 14th century, but today some wonder about the queer causes behind her beard.  More info

Saints Boris and George: United in love

St. Boris and George by Robert Lentz
The love between Saint Boris and George the Hungarian ended in tragedy in 1015 in medieval Russia. Their feast day is July 24 -- the same day that same-sex marriage became legal in New York in 2011.

Boris was a prince who had a magnificent gold necklace made for his servant George because he "was loved by Boris beyond reckoning."   More info

Gentileschi shows strong Biblical women

Judith and Her Maidservant by Artemisia Gentileschi Baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi inspires people with her paintings of strong Biblical women -- created despite the obstacles that she faced as a woman in 17th-century Italy.

Many queer people and our allies can relate to her battles against discrimination and sexual violence. More info
