Candlelight Tour This Friday
|
Special Nighttime Tour
On Friday, the street will be aglow with candlelight. In
the Jean Hasbrouck House, guests will have an opportunity to experience the
house as few do - by the nighttime candlelight that would have been part of every
late winter evening in the 1700s. Light, the scarcity of it and the need to capture as much
natural light as possible informed both design and function of the houses. Unique lighting implements from our collections, including the betty lamp, will be
featured.
Across the street in the Deyo
House, guests will experience one of the village's finest houses just at the
time that electric light has come to the village. The Brodheads, then in residence, take
advantage of this new innovation, but continue to live by the soft, warm glow
they knew from gas and candlelight. The
result is a transition from the old to the new.
The tour will begin at 7pm in
the DuBois Fort Visitor Center at 81 Huguenot Street. Here guests can enjoy a glass of wine or
sparkling water before departing down a candlelit path to the museum
houses. $12 per person ($10 for Friends of Huguenot Street). Advance reservations are not
required, but are suggested. To make a
reservation, click on the candle above or call (845) 255-1889.

Before Stone: Early Structures Talk on Saturday
|
Evolving Topic Discussed
Until recently, not much was known about what came before our iconic stone houses. Oral history told us that the stone houses dated to the late 1600s. Investigation and research conducted in the last several years reveal that these houses were not built until the early 1700s. So what came before? Architect Amanda Lewkowicz and Richard Heyl de Ortiz, Director of Marketing and Community Relations, will lead an enlightening discussion about the wigwams, pit houses and other structures that sheltered Native Americans and early Europeans in New Paltz. The talk will begin at 7pm in the DuBois Fort Visitor Center at 81 Huguenot Street. $7 per person. $5 for Friends of Huguenot Street.

The Street in Winter: Photo Albums Online
|
See It All on Photobucket
In the past several weeks, the Hudson Valley finally received some of the snow that seemed to be detoured to place such as Philadelphia and Washington D.C. for much of the season. The Street has been shrouded in white. For those who couldn't be here, we've put together a couple of short photo slide shows. Check them out on Photobucket: Snowstorm on the StreetSun, Snow and the Street
