From Founders to Farmers: An Archaeologist's View
of 19th Century Homes in the Hudson Valley
The nineteenth century was a time of rapid change in the country and in our region. This presentation discusses the archaeology of nineteenth century dwellings using examples from the Hudson Valley. Sites discussed include residences of elites, dwellings of lower status landholders and farmsteads. The presentation describes how historic archaeology complements, frequently exceeds, and sometimes contradicts the documentary record for understanding past behavior.  The talk is presented by Eugene J. Boesch, who received a PhD in Anthropology from New York University and has served as a member of the Historic Preservation Advisory Committees for Westchester and Putnam Counties.  Sponsored by the New York Council for the Humanities.  $3 donation suggested.

A recent article in Car & Travel Magazine by AAA New York offers a great suggestion.  Sippin' in the Shawangunks features the area's vineyards and the history of wine in our region -- a history that is said to have begun with the winemaking skills the Huguenots brought to the Hudson Valley over 300 years ago.  To view Sippin in the Shawagunks, click here.
