| U.S. Labor Department Awards Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board, Inc. $4.7 Million for Technical Skills Training
Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis announced Thursday during a conference call with reporters more than $183 million in grants was awarded to 43 public-private partnerships serving 28 states through the second round of funding under the H-1B Technical Skills Training Grant Competition. The grants will provide education, training and job placement assistance related to high-growth fields in which employers are currently using the H-1B nonimmigrant visa program to hire foreign workers. The funds gathered from the H-1B program are intended to be used to raise the technical skill levels of American workers and, over time, help businesses reduce their need to use the H-1B program.
"The federal grant awards announced today will provide U.S. workers with the training they need to succeed in the high tech, high-growth jobs of the future," said Secretary Solis. "Developing a strong and vibrant workforce that fits the needs of American businesses is critical to forming an America built to last."
The Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board (NWWIB), in partnership with the North Central Wisconsin Workforce Development Board and the Fox Valley Workforce Development Board, has received $4.7 million to train 550 healthcare workers in 26 counties in northern and central Wisconsin over the next three years.
The Health Career and Regional Employment (HealthCARE) Project will support On-the-Job Training in healthcare career pathway occupations, such as medical and health services managers, registered nurses, occupational therapists, healthcare practitioners, and other positions. The HealthCARE Project will supply healthcare industry employers with the highly skilled and competent workforce needed to fill current and anticipated job openings.
"I am thrilled that the Department of Labor has chosen the NWWIB as a grant recipient. This is an exciting opportunity for the three workforce development board partners to further provide our regional healthcare partners and businesses with skilled and in-demand workers," said NWWIB, Inc. Chief Executive Officer, Mari Kay-Nabozny. "We worked hard to develop a grant application that would truly impact the healthcare industry and regional workforce and we are pleased that the Department of Labor recognized our innovative On-the-Job Training Program and partnership."
Last October, the Labor Department awarded more than $159 million to 36 grantees in the first round of the competition. Between the two rounds of grants, more than $163 million has been designated to provide On-the-Job Training, allowing participants to learn new skills while earning a regular paycheck. More than $200 million has been designated for grantees that serve participants who have been identified as long-term unemployed. Along with healthcare, the grants also represent significant investments in fields such as information technology and advanced manufacturing.

Resources that WORK for Small Businesses
Northern Wisconsin businesses and entrepreneurs have many resources available to them. Take a look at Northcentral Technical College's Business and Industry Solutions team and UW-Superior Small Business Development Center, who both provide consulting and training services to help businesses to be competitive in their respective markets.
Northcentral Technical College's (NTC) Business and Industry Solutions team serves the needs of any business or organization within their district looking to improve the skills of their workforce or to find solutions to identified problems. After a meeting with a member of the Business and Industry Solutions team, where areas of concern or problems are identified, a proposal is developed outlining the training, or course, recommended. This would include the hours, dates, cost, and proposed outcomes, or return on investment. The original quoted price is honored by the team whether the company schedules the training immediately or if the company decides to pursue this option six months later. Training is tailored to the needs of the organization or business seeking services. Some of the more popular programs or services include team building, problem solving, conflict resolution, communication, Microsoft Office, critical core business skills, and others.
The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at UW-Superior has a similar approach and emphasis. It is one of thirteen SBDCs in the state with similar centers throughout the rest of the United States. SBDC's primary focus is to provide one-to-one business counseling to aspiring entrepreneurs and existing business owners. This is one of their most popular services as it is confidential and offered at no charge to any Wisconsin business or resident. These sessions are typically one-hour and the client can schedule as many as needed. Usually, clients are given instructions or an assignment to complete before the next session.
SBDC is also the facilitator for the Twin Ports Inventors & Entrepreneurs' Club, which meets in Superior the second Monday of every month at 6:00PM at WITC Superior. This club often features speakers and the meeting itself is a popular networking event for area entrepreneurs and inventors. |

2012 WWDA Day at the Capitol

The Wisconsin Workforce Development Association (WWDA) Day at the Capitol was another success. Some NWWIB board members and staff attended and were able to work with many of our legislators to let them know what NWWIB does and what services we can provide to their constituents. Invitations were also extended to visit the Job Centers in NWWIB's region this summer. |
