Congressman Sean Duffy visited the Ashland Job Center on Friday, August 26th. Northwest Wisconsin Concentrated Employment Program, Inc. (CEP, Inc.) and the Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (NWWIB) coordinated the visit. CEP, Inc. Employment Specialist Assistant, Julie Shilts, gave the tour of the facilities, explained some of the resources available, and introduced him to job seekers using the resource room.

Randy Rust and Jessica Gallagher, both of Ashland Industries, were also on hand to discuss how they make use of the employment and training resources available through the NWWIB and CEP, Inc. On-the-Job Training and industry partnership grant trainings have been helpful to the company in recent years. Also, regional welding boot camps have helped them find workers with the skill set that Ashland Industries is looking for.

After touring the Job Center, Mari Kay-Nabozny, Chief Executive Officer of NWWIB, Brad Gingras, Chief Operating Officer, and Congressmen Duffy and his staff discussed the Workforce Investment Act and other successful area employment programs.

"We are so pleased to have had the opportunity to sit down with Congressman Duffy and his staff to discuss the region's workforce challenges. He took a real interest in what the job seekers and employers had to say about workforce development needs in the area and we look forward to working with his office more in the future on finding solutions." said NWWIB CEO Mari Kay-Nabozny.

Job Center Partners: The Workforce Development Specialists that make it happen!

In honor of Workforce Development Month in September, the Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board, Inc. is highlighting two of our Job Center of Wisconsin partners: Job Service and Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. Job Centers deliver a range of services that stretch beyond simply finding a job. They can also help you along a career pathway.

Job Centers in northwest Wisconsin have five primary partners who bring a key component to the partnership. The partners in the northwest region consist of: Job Service, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College or Northcentral Technical College, W2 providers, and Northwest Wisconsin Concentrated Employment Program, Inc. Each Job Center partner has the common goal of strengthening Wisconsin's workforce and economy.

"Most of the agencies that create Job Centers have a targeted population," said Chuck Gottschall, Job Service Workforce Development Area (WDA) #7 Director. "Job Service doesn't have eligibility requirements. Our main job is to ensure that a high quality of public labor exchange and targeted program services are made easily available to all job seekers and employers in Wisconsin."

As a part of the Job Center system, Job Service provides job seekers with job search assistance, individual and group career exploration, re-employment services to unemployment insurance claimants, and workshops. Career Counselors host many career-related workshops throughout the region, such as resume writing, interviewing skills, and social media guides and guidelines. Job seekers also have the opportunity to receive a National Career Readiness Certificate with help from Job Service staff. Each bronze, silver, gold, or platinum level represents a job seeker's work readiness skill level to potential employers.

"The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation provides employment services and counseling for job seekers with disabilities," said Tom Draghi, WDA 7 District Director of DVR. "We have a range of services to enable an individual to get back to work and to provide training and technical assistance to employers about disability issues."

The focus of DVR is on individuals with disabilities who face a substantial barrier, or barriers, to employment and helping these individuals overcome these barriers. Other related services DVR offers are information and referral services, transition to work services for students with disabilities in high school, and disability employment assessment. Department of Labor has announced October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month. In Draghi's northwest Wisconsin region, DVR hosts the Opportunities for Success Awards Banquet, which recognizes employers, agencies, and organizations that help people with disabilities maintain and obtain employment.
