STEP Student of the Year

We are pleased to announce that the 2010-2011 STEP Student of the Year is Rosina Hendrickson from the Diocese of Mobile, AL. With this award we recognize her hard work, her contribution to the learning experience of her fellow students and her love of the Church.
As some of our course facilitators shared, "She was thoughtful and is very balanced in her theology. She is a class act and a gift to have in a course with all she does to encourage others in the course. She is super diligent in her answers, comments on assignments and chats, and very rooted in ministry at a parish that sounds full of life."
Rosina shared, "I am truly honored by this selection and am grateful for the many benefits I have received through the courses I have taken with STEP. I always find that there is something I learn both from the course material and my fellow classmates in each course I take."
Other course participants who were nominated and deserve recognition for their activity in the courses include:
Steve Garcia, Santa Fe, NM
Christina Chase, Manchester, NH
Dan McGrath, Ogdensburg, NY
Robert Lynott, Orange, CA
Ann Marie De Stefano, Trenton, NJ

The Church
Resources for Prayer - Pray.nd.edu, an outreach of the Notre Dame Alumni Association, provides a wealth of prayer resources, like daily scripture readings and reflections. The site also offers a variety of videos. One worth highlighting is --
Discovering Your Mission: Living a God Given Purpose--
"One of the greatest indicators of a fulfilling life is the depth of purpose we find in our every day. In this program we hear the story of one Notre Dame graduate who sought out Mother Teresa to answer his nagging question: 'How will I be judged at my death?' You will also learn many tangible ideas to not only help yourself deepen your meaning in life but also to assist others on this journey."
- Sacred Space http://www.sacredspace.ie "We invite you to make a 'Sacred Space' in your day, and spend ten minutes, praying here and now, as you sit at your computer, with the help of on-screen guidance and scripture chosen specially every day."
- DivineOffice http://divineoffice.org/
"The Liturgy of the Hours is the prayer of the whole People of God. In it, Christ himself 'continues his priestly work through his Church.' His members participate according to their own place in the Church and the circumstances of their lives. The laity, too, are encouraged to recite the divine office either with the priests, among themselves, or individually."

What's New at STEP?
Great Growth: 2010-11 Enrollments Increase
As the 2010-11 Academic Year draws to a close, we celebrate great growth this past year. This significant growth (nearly 700 additional enrollments) came as result of new diocesan partnerships and more Catholic laity learning about STEP and taking courses.
Thank you to all who support STEP!

STEP Partners with NCEA
National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) Secondary Schools division and STEP will offer a seven-week introductory course on the Catholic faith for Catholic school administrative and teaching personnel. The course will begin October 10, 2011, and, for the first year, will run as a pilot. Each school participates as a group, and the cost is free for this year. Contact STEP Director, Thomas Cummings, if your school is interested.

Welcome Lou Weber

We are excited to welcome Lou Weber to the STEP staff. He replaces Jill Dunkel, as the Technical Support Specialist. Lou will be active behind the scenes to make sure the STEP website and course content works well.
Lou graduated from Notre Dame in 1995. He then taught in Mississippi as a member of Notre Dame's Alliance for Catholic Education program. After working for several years as an actuarial consultant in Chicago, Lou returned to his home state to earn a library and information science degree from the University of Michigan. He then taught in Jackson, Michigan, as a library media specialist. Lou and his wife returned to South Bend, and Lou opted to be the stay-at-home parent for his four sons. He has enjoyed working for Notre Dame in a number of roles, and joined the STEP program in July 2011.

Testing New Course Software
The University of Notre Dame currently uses Concourse to administer online courses, even all STEP courses. Presently, the University is in a trial phase testing a new open source course software-- Sakai. STEP will contribute to the testing with one trial run course in October 2011. In the event the University rolls over to a new system, all will be well prepared.
One great benefit we expect will come in the chat tool. As many of you know, STEP courses rely on chat to encourage theological dialog and exploration of a given subject. This tool often enables deep sharing with other devoted to their faith. But, this is often the most problematic tool in the Concourse software. New software could help eliminate these difficulties.
If you are having trouble-- STEP Problem Report remains the best way to get individual help.
