Institute for Church Life

STEP is a part of the University of Notre Dame's Institute for Church Life and helps serve the University's larger mission as a Catholic Institution.  "A Catholic University's mission is to witness to the values of the Gospel in the way appropriate for universities to do so, in the medium of academic excellence.  The Institute's outreach function takes the academic excellence and prestige of the University and turns it into a witness bearing leadership role in the life of the Church at large," according to Dr. John C. Cavadini, Ph.D; Chair, Department of Theology and Director, Institute for Church Life.

What are Diocesan Partnerships?

Diocesan Partnerships are an integral part of STEP and our service to the Catholic Church.  Dioceses use STEP's courses for catechetical certification, continuing education, and as the theological component of diaconate and lay ministry programs.

Some of the diocese affiliated with STEP for the coming year are:
  • Kingston, Ontario
  • Manchester, New Hampshire
  • Ogdensburg, New York
  • Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Santa Fe, New Mexico
These diocese have men and women in Lay Ministry and/or Diaconate Formation who will become leaders in their local church.

If you or a colleague are interested in exploring a partnership with STEP please contact Tom Cummings, Director, STEP.

What are people saying about STEP?

"I really enjoyed my interaction with students throughout the country.
The instructor was top notch. The course material was well presented. The technology was easy. The work load was not too heavy but there [were] a lot of reflective questions. The length of the course was only six weeks which limited the time and depth that one could go into the material but also prevented midcourse burn out. I would  definitely take another course of this type."

The Church

How does the Church help the Catholic faithful to speak about political and social questions?

Every four years since 1976, the Administrative Committee of the Bishops has offered moral guidance to U.S. Catholics as they head to the voting booths.  On November 14, 2007, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops voted to approve the publication of the Faithful Citizenship document in anticipation of the 2008 presidential elections.

The current publication differs slightly from previous editions in title and tone.
Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call to Political Responsibility once again strongly encourages Catholics to be involved in political life, and to rely on the values of their faith in shaping policy and in choosing candidates.

Find out more by taking a course on the document Faithful Citizenship being offered this fall by STEP:

Facilitators
STEP offers more than 70 online courses in six sessions each year to Catholics around the world.  Each course offered requires a "Facilitator."  Most STEP courses are developed and built by Notre Dame Professors, and Facilitators are used to guide the students through the material.  The Facilitator is not a "teacher" in the sense that we might typically think of one in the conventional classroom.  It is more appropriate to view this person as a "moderator" or "guide."

Be cause theological knowledge and experience is necessary to faithfully guide students through courses, all Facilitators must have at least a master's degree in theology.  A primary concern for Facilitators is to faithfully present Church teaching and to serve the Church's catechetical mission.  Our facilitators strive to encourage mature, respectful dialogue and inquiry.

You can read about the wonderful course facilitators here:  "Meet the STEP Facilitators"

Thank you for reading through our newsletter.  As we shared, this is a new endeavor for STEP.  If there are topics that you are interested in hearing about, please let us know what you would like to see in future newsletters.  You can e-mail comments and suggestions to us here.

Sincerely,
STEP, University of Notre Dame
