Savage Mill at Night

Greetings~

Summer is in full swing and we hope you had a safe and exciting Fourth of July!   Whether you had a barbeque or went to fireworks or something else, we thought it would be nice to revisit some of the history behind this American holiday.  We put together a brief time-line of the events leading up to our independence from the British.  We also found a recipe for one of George Washington's favorite indulgences, Fish House Punch.  Maybe you'll want to mix up a batch at your next cookout!

Our Spotlight Dealer this month is Jeff Burnett of Burnett's Buttons and Books.  He's written an article about collecting posters and propaganda from the World Wars.  Jeff is a long time collector and has been a dealer in military and political posters and other historic treasures for over 15 years.  He will also be presenting a lecture entitled, "Winning the World Wars on the Home Front with Posters" on Sunday, July 20.  Please join us!

Our 20th Anniversary Celebration was so much fun!  It was great to see all of you who came out to help us mark the happy occasion.  We'd like to thank everyone who contributed their time to make the weekend extra special, notably, Sarah Casey for her beautiful music, Woodhall Wine Cellars, Dianne Baker of Painted Lady Faux, Pamela Smith Evans of Evans' Interiors Extraordinaire, and speaker and author Debrah Poneman.   We really appreciate Betty Evans of Sign-A-Rama of Columbia and Bill Dodd of Design Kitchens & Bath who graciously contributed their time. And a big thank you goes to our wonderful appraisers: Grace Maynard, Gary Baldwin, Peggy Flagg, Marie Neuman, Dan Paris, Charles Schrider, Michael delComa, Dan James, Katie Flynn, Lucy Baldwin, and Jim Paper.

A very special thank you goes to the staff  of the Antique Center and the International Antiques and Home Design Center for all of the hard work that went into our anniversary and for all that you do every day to make this such a special place.  Thank You!

~Enjoy!

Collecting Posters and Propaganda from the World Wars
by Jeff Burnett, Burnett's Buttons and Books
Victory Begins at Home by John Falter; WWII; $425Collecting military posters from the First and Second World Wars takes knowledge and study just like any other field of collecting.  I have been collecting these posters for over 30 years and dealing in them for over 15 years.  The posters come in a variety of sizes and are often done by artists who were, or who would be, famous.  The most popular artists from the World War One era are James Montgomery Flagg, Howard Chandler Christy and Harrison Fisher.  Norman Rockwell and John Falter are popular World War Two artists.

Victory Liberty Loan by Howard Chandler Christy; $475The condition of the poster is vital to the buyer and seller.  It always amazes me that so many of these posters have even survived.  Rips and tears must always be mended using only archival tape.  Posters should always be mounted on acid-free foam core and framed by someone who is familiar with archival procedures.  These works of art are treasures of history and must be treated as such.  These posters were meant for display in factories, post offices, schools, train stations and various other locations.

Food and Ammunition, U.S. Food Administration; $485The World War One posters that are very "hot" right now were issued by the U.S. Food Administration.  World War One posters also stress raising money for Liberty Loans, Liberty Bonds, War Stamps and the Red Cross.  The Red Cross posters from World War One are extremely popular and beautiful.  These posters were usually rolled up when they were sent to the various distribution points.

World War Two posters were almost always folded and shipped in a brown envelope.  The rule of thumb is that you must see the folds in World War Two posters for them to be real and that the folds do not Mussolini, Tojo, Hitler; 1942; $375come out.  World War Two posters picturing Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo in various forms are highly desirable.  There were seven War Bond drives during the war.  The theme of "Careless Talk" is present on many World War Two posters and some of these are very graphic in appearance.

Grow Your Own, 1943; $195Posters from the World Wars used to be readily available and could be found at very low prices.  The present market is very strong as people have come to appreciate the history and artwork of days gone by.  Reproductions do abound, but they are often not the original size.  "Buyer Beware" and only buy from a dealer experienced in quality paper items.  The price of posters is often determined by the artist, scene, size and condition.  Some can be found for as little as $50.00 while others can go as high as $10,000.00 or more.  The general range for most posters is in the $200.00 to $400.00 area.
The Fourth of July: An Independence Time-Line

April, 1775- Paul Revere makes his midnight ride as King George's  troops advance on Concord, Massachusetts, marking the unofficial beginning of the American Revolution.

May 1776- The colonies send delegates to Philadelphia for the Second Continental Congress.

June 1776- Efforts to come to a consensus on a suitable resolution to the problem of English rule have been fruitless and a committee to draft a formal declaration of independence is formed.  Thomas Jefferson is named to head the committee.

June 28, 1776- The first draft of the colonies' Declaration of Independence is presented to the Congress.

July 4, 1776- The final draft of the Declaration of Independence is voted on. 9 out of 13 colonies vote Yes; Pennsylvania and South Carolina vote No; Delaware is Undecided and New York Abstains.  The majority wins and the signing of the Declaration of Independence by the members of the Continental Congress begins, starting with it's president, John Hancock.

Independence Time-LineJuly 6, 1776- The Declaration of Independence is printed by the Pennsylvania Evening Post.

July 8, 1776- The Declaration of Independence is read publicly for the first time in what is now known as Independence Square in Philadelphia.

August 1776- The signing of the Declaration is complete.

July 4, 1777- The first official Independence Day Celebration takes place.

The Colony in Schuykill's
Fish House Punch, 1732

Fish House PunchIngredients From
The Philadelphia Times, May 24, 1896, Wednesday

The Colony in Schuykill (State in Schuykill as of 1783) in Philadelphia, a.k.a. The Fish House Club, was established in 1732 and is said to be the oldest English speaking club still in existence in the world.  Fish House Punch is their signature drink and George Washington, a member of The Colony in Schuykill, apparently enjoyed it very much on more than one occasion!  He The Colony in Schuykill, est.1732even served it at a Farewell toTroops Celebration at the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783. We found many variations on the recipe...this one was shared with The Philadelphia Times by a member of the State in Schuykill in 1896.

Mix sugar and citrus juice until dissolved (add water as necessary), add liquor, stir well and pour over a block of ice. Add sliced fruit and let stand for several hours, occasionally spooning mixture over the ice, to allow flavors to meld.
