As we approach the 2010-2011 AGA membership year, the Association asks you to take part in our effort to go "green" by renewing your membership online. If you haven't already done so, why not renew now? Your membership dues were due March 31, 2010. Paying now eliminates the need for us to send you reminder notices--saving paper and trees. Renewing online is as easy as logging on to the Members Only section of the website at www.agacgfm.org. Your AGA ID number is the same as your membership ID and your password is your first initial immediately followed by your last name (no spaces), unless you have changed it.

This audio conference features a case study. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has a crucial role to play in today's economy through their commitment to sustaining home ownership, creating housing opportunities and supporting community development for those in need. The agency's staff is challenged to oversee numerous programs nationwide and to provide assurance to the Office of the Inspector General on the integrity, efficiency and effectiveness of HUD operations.
To share their practical experiences in information technology audits and the use of audit analytics are Steve Biskie, CPA, CITP, CISA, director of services product management, ACL Services, Ltd. who has more than15 years of experience in information technology audit for public accounting (as a former Deloitte manager), private industry and with specialized risk management consulting firms; and Cliff Cole, computer audit specialist, Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The New York Capital Chapter Association of Government Accountants and the Institute of Management Accountants are pleased to announce its second installment of "How did I get to be me?" Come to breakfast and hear Coach Will Brown answer that question.
Will Brown is in his ninth season as the University at Albany's men's basketball head coach. In 2008-09, the UAlbany program won 15 or more games resulting in its fourth consecutive season with 15 or more wins.
Brown led the Great Danes to their first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament berth in 2005-06 after winning both the American East Conference tournament and regular season titles. UAlbany set the program's Division I record for single-season victories with a 21-11 record and produced its highest win total since 1993-94. His squad posted UAlbany's first postseason triumph in 11 years with three wins in America East tournament play. Brown was named the New York State Coach of the Year.
Brown was appointed as UAlbany's head coach on March 13, 2002, and has worked on the collegiate level since 1995. He became the 15th head coach in the history of the program. At age 36, Brown is one of the youngest Division I head coaches in the nation.
Join us to hear Will Brown's thoughts on leadership and how to build a successful team. Tom Walters, an avid sports fan and State Education Department employee, will interview Will.

Community Service: Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) |

'Tis the season of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)!
For the past several years, the New York Capital Chapter of the AGA has proudly supported the Albany Public Library in helping those citizens who are unable to prepare or pay for their annual tax preparation. To be a volunteer, all you need to do is pass a tax preparation test (open book), and you can volunteer as much or as little time as you would like and whenever you would like, to prepare easy tax returns to those less fortunate from the end of January until mid April.
Currently, tax preparation at the Albany Public Library is on Saturdays from 9am-3pm; However, there are multiple locations to volunteer from within the Capital District. All publications, user guides and software training are available and provided to volunteers. Prior tax preparation is not needed!

Audio Conference: Those Faint Signals - Learning to Catch Ethical Slippage Before It's Too Late

During this audio conference, the presenter will recount some recent ethical lapses in government and examine the causes and effects. By examining a series of ethical lapses, we find that a pattern emerges. That pattern allows us to think about this question: What is it in the culture of an agency that allows obvious ethical breaches to occur and continue? Once we understand the culture, we can think about putting the detection methods, as well as antidotes, in place.
The compliance training, the codes, and all those easily measurable components of ethical culture may not tell the full story. Without the full story, we can never be sure that we are catching all those gradual slips. The full story requires consideration of factors that are not easily placed into dashboard measures. The presenter takes a look at some of the faint signals which appear long before the ethical troubles emerge.
To share her expertise in ethical behavior and its ramifications is Marianne M. Jennings, JD, Professor in the Department of Management in the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University (ASU). At ASU, Marianne teaches graduate courses in the MBA program in business ethics and the legal environment of business. Professor Jennings has authored hundreds of articles and has six textbooks and monographs in circulation. Marianne's latest book, The Seven Signs of Ethical Collapse, was published by St. Martin's Press in July 2006. She has conducted more than 300 workshops and seminars in the areas of business, personal, government, legal, academic and professional ethics. Among her many awards and honors, Marianne was inducted into the AGA Speakers' Hall of Fame and also received a writers' award for best article in AGA's Journal of Government Financial Management.

Annual Charity Golf Tournament |
When: Friday, June 4th
Where: Van Patten Golf Club, 924 Main Street, Clifton Park, NY
Cost: $80 per person, with the proceeds to benefit the Albany Medical Center's Children's Hospital.
The local chapters of the AGA, IIA, ACFE and ISACA are co-sponsoring a golf tournament to benefit the Albany Medical Center Children's Hospital.
The day will include coffee, pastries, bagels and juice in the morning, 18 holes of golf (cart included) at the Van Patten Golf Club in Clifton Park, as well as an awards ceremony with lunch after golf. Lunch will include barbequed chicken, sausage and peppers, ziti, deli platter, cheeses, and salads. The cost of this event is $80 per person with the proceeds to benefit the Albany Medical Center's Children's Hospital.
Please join us for a day of golf and to support the wonderful accomplishments of the Children's Hospital. Don't have a full team? Not a problem! We will round out your team with other participants (we'll contact you about your team prior to the event).
The registration deadline is May 21, 2010.

Operation DVD |
| The New York Capital Chapter of the AGA is proud to participate in OPERATION DVD.
Since outdoor entertainment is extremely difficult to provide for our soldiers overseas, many are passing time watching movies. We will be conducting a DVD drive for the next few months to support our soldiers. New and used DVDs are accepted and there will be a drop box at all of our upcoming events.
