Greetings!
I hope you have all enjoyed the summer, wherever you've been and whatever you've been doing and that you have had the chance to take a good break.
Those of you who reorganized your ways of working during the Olympics must be all getting back to normal again now and I do hope everything went smoothly for you.
Just like us, you could think that now everyone is getting into the full swing of things again after the summer break, it might well be the right time to send out an email, whether to try and drum up some new business or simply remind existing customers that you are here. With email, modern technology has presented us with a very instant and low cost option for contacting our customers, but email marketing does have its pitfalls and dangers. Take a look at our article below to see how you can avoid some of these.
With the Olympic motto "Inspire a generation" still very fresh in our minds, it is interesting to note that it is not only success in sport that comes from true inspiration, but also success in business. Businesses start with entrepreneurs - people like Bill Gates and Richard Branson, who are so inspired by an idea that they are driven to make it a reality. So where does such an idea come to them and what really motivates them to take it beyond just an idea. Business Link, the Government's online resource for businesses, has done some interesting research into this. See our article below for more detail.

Effective Email Marketing
The thought of contacting thousands of potential customers from one easy-to-write email is very appealing. It costs almost nothing and you can get your message out almost immediately. You can create awareness quickly and if you build a strong message you may find better responses than from traditional mail. It enables you to build newsworthy and up-to-the-minute offers and to keep in touch with regular customers, But it needs to be done effectively or it will simply be treated as spam.
When not to use email marketing
Think about your customers. Are they in a trade or user base that does not use a computer? If so, there is little point in creating an email offer. Badly done, email marketing can damage your reputation, so it should not be used unless properly planned and targeted at the right audience.
Email lists
The best email list you can get is one that you have built up over time in your own business, with supporting data about the purchases a client has made and an agreement from the client to receive email offers.
If you choose to purchase email lists -
DO
- Validate the company selling the data and make sure they are reputable. What other clients do they have and what response rate did they get? Follow up any references to make sure they are real. If in doubt choose another supplier - after all it is your reputation at risk here.
- Make sure any list broker you work with guarantees that the email address owners have confirmed they wish to receive emails.
DON'T
- Buy CDs etc. with millions of names and email addresses on them. These have been created using automated software (mostly spam) and their use is illegal (see below).
You can search registered reputable email list providers on the Direct Marketing Association website
Email list management
List management can be difficult and is fraught with potential pitfalls. If you are intending to send out email marketing on a regular basis then, unless you are a big enough organization to employ in-house experts, it is a good idea to invest in some list management software that is designed to help you manage the names and addresses of recipients. Another solution is to use a hosted service, which will cost up to about £200 per month, but the provider will be responsible for managing your email traffic.
Email response tracking
Knowing how successful your emails have been is critical. There are a couple of techniques you can use to measure the response rate.
- If you embed a link to a specific web page, created for the promotion, you can see how many people click through to the page.
- Email campaign software solutions have email response tracking built in.
Complying with UK Law
- When you send a marketing email the recipient must have agreed to receive the message or you must already have their email address legitimately because they are an existing customer.
- You must make it clear who is sending the message by including your email address and
- You must also provide a current address for the recipient to use if they wish to contact you to withdraw their consent for mailings. If they do withdraw their consent, it is illegal to email them again.

What inspires someone to start a successful business?
Of course all businesses start with an initial idea and according to research conducted by Business Link, the Government's online resource for businesses, little has changed since the day Archimedes stepped into his bath in terms of the type of place where that "Eureka!" moment of inspiration might strike. Of the 500 entrepreneurs involved in the research, many cited places such as the bath, loo or bed as the birth place of their initial business idea, although many also said their ideas first came to them at work or from talking to friends.
But many people have ideas, far less actually do anything about them. So what inspires an entrepreneur to turn their idea into a successful business? Responses from the same research were as follows -
- 80% wanted power and control over their lives
- 78% wanted the personal freedom of going it alone
- 77% "knew" their idea would make money
- 74% of men and 64% of women thought they could do better than their bosses
When it came to the "tipping point" - the point at which they they took the plunge and made a serious attempt to put their ideas in action, these were the most common responses
- 34% - seeing others take the leap
- 20% - redundancy
- 16% - The Dragon's Den TV show
- 12% - having a baby
- 3% - moving house
