Mobile phone facts
| |
5.3 billion people - 77% of the world's population - are mobile phone subscribers
The fastest growth in mobile phone usage is in China and India
The most popular brand of mobile phone is Nokia in Western Europe, Samsung in the US and Sharp in Japan
In 2009 half a billion people worldwide were using mobile phones to access the internet. With 277 million of these in China alone, this is expected to more than double by 2014, as mobile overtakes the PC as the most popular way to get on the internet
Many mobile internet users are mobile-only, i.e. they do not, or very rarely, use a desktop, laptop or iPad etc. to access the internet. The percentage of mobile phone subscribers who are mobile-only internet users is 70% in Egypt, 59% in India and 25% in the US
Today in Western Europe and the US, over 90 percent of mobile subscribers have an internet-ready phone

Greetings!
I am off to Bahrain at the end of June to take part in delivering a set of workshops on benchmarking for excellence taking place from 27th-29th June. I will be presenting the workshop session on Quality Management, which is based on the EFQM Excellence Model. Our Newsletter readers based in Bahrain and neighbouring Middle Eastern countries may wish to take the opportunity of attending this event, based at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Kingdom of Bahrain. It is a set of seven workshops, run by Bahrain based Origin Consulting Group, centred around "TRADE", a five stage benchmarking methodology which is focused on the exchange (or "trade") of information and best practices to improve the performance of processes, goods and services. There is a main workshop about the "TRADE" methodology itself and six satellite workshops covering various aspects of performance measurement, excellence and quality management. More details about this "7 in One" set of workshops are given in the article below.
Two of Ley Hill Solutions associates had an enjoyable and stimulating time earlier this month supporting one of our clients in the rail industry at the major international exhibition, Railtex 2011, an international business to business exhibition focused on the rail industry. This is held once every two years and covers a wide range of railway equipment, systems and services. All key suppliers to the rail industry were there, many from all over Europe and beyond. We are proud of our experience in the rail sector, where there is a lot of activity going on in Europe to enhance service levels, reduce cost and improve efficiency in the rail infrastruture. Britain is sadly lacking behind fellow European countries in this, so it was very interesting to share ideas with other exhibitors. We believe there is also real potential in countries lacking the transport and communication infrastructure to support their strong emerging economies economies, such as in the Gulf States and Far East. See below for pictures and more details of our experience at the exhibition.

With over 400 exhibitors and nearly10,000 visiting rail industry professionals from around 50 countries, we had a very interesting time in our three days at this exhibition last week. There was plenty to see, do and talk about and we came away with the clear knowledge that this is an exciting industry with massive growth and development potential, even in these hardened economic times.

We were on stand J32 alongside one of our most valued customers, Bakerail Services Ltd., who supply specialist and dedicated support in the field of Railway Infrastructure Systems Engineering, offering services such as wheel, track and brake monitoring and rail milling. By helping them install an effective quality management system, we have given them the confidence that their management systems, quality standards and processes meet their customer needs and expectations in an industry which has very exacting standards, especially in areas such as health and safety and maintenance cost.

Bakerail Services Ltd. is a small company in terms of permanent employees and overheads, so can least afford to spend money on buying in services unless they really add value to their business. They found our expertise ensured the quality management system they installed was right for their business and enhanced their offer to customers and so considered our services to be of critical value to them.
