Think about it!

What do you do with your holiday photos?

In the old days you showed your friends, bored them to death and then put them in an album in the cupboard.

Now you might share them on Facebook or another social networking site.

Say you uploaded a SINGLE 400kb snap in 30 seconds and that was seen by 20 friends.

The energy consumption by the computers and servers running to make this happen would match a 100 watt bulb left on for half an hour!!!!!!

The chips in our credit cards today are as powerful as the Intel 386 processors that ran our Personal Computers in the early1990's
The Pandemic Problem

The increasing threat of disease
40 new diseases identified since the 1970's

1,100 epidemic events verified between 2002 and 2007

Newsletter - December 2009

Greetings!

With the New Year approaching fast and new beginnings in mind, now might be the time to think about the benefits many organisations have gained through on-going and systematic review and improvement of their performance, using the EFQM Excellence Model. As explained in October, this has been newly revised for 2010 to better reflect the current climate we are all working in, especially increasing globalisation and the importance of creating a sustainable future. Or, if you are already using the Model but have not yet considered applying for an award, maybe now is the time to do so.

Ley Hill Solutions consultants were among the Lead Assessors for the 2009 UK Excellence Award and we were very pleased to be able to attend this year's Award Winners Conference on the 8th December, where winners outlined their journey to excellence and the benefits to their organisations of using the Model. Have a look below at a couple of examples of the very tangible benefits winners have gained and then why not make it a New Year's resolution to give serious thought to how your organisation would benefit from this approach.

I hope you are looking forward to a relaxing break over the festive season and that 2010 will be a very successful year
British Quality Foundation 2009 Award Winners Conference

Below are some of the benefits of using the EFQM Model experienced by two of the award winning organisations. All of the benefits gained by this year's winners are too numerous to mention here, so the following is just a flavour, but I think you will agree, a pretty impressive flavour.

Ricoh UK Products Ltd (Excellence Award Winner)

Ricoh UK Products Ltd have long enjoyed the benefits of using the Model and also received the UK Excellence Award in 2005. Since then they have achieved, amongst many others, the following performance improvements

  • Sales turnover up 69%
  • Sales per employee up 35%
  • Heath and Safety reportable incidents down 67%
Lloyds Register (Lean Six Sigma project winner) "Efficient and happier"

The winning project delivered a process improvement that achieved an increase in predicted revenue of £1 million and a cost saving of £130,00, as well as an improvement in staff morale due to reduced stress levels and the pooling of resources to cope with increased customer demand.

21st Century Risks

Although increasing globalisation and new technologies have brought many benefits and opportunities, it has also brought systemic risks by increasing interdependence and complexity, as the recent global financial crisis demonstrates all too clearly. Financial flows are global, so what happens in one country sends shocks around the world and the future will only see us becoming more vulnerable to such shocks.

While corporate management is often global, the public sector is locked into an outdated model, which is ill prepared for real issues such as climate change, pandemics and the threat of bio-terrorism. (see the short article on "The Pandemic Problem" to the left). Solutions to these will often be local, even at community or household level, but the structure of solutions must be agreed globally.

As the private sector alone can manage effectively on a global basis, what can the public sector learn from it to inform its decision making? There needs to be clear focus on systemic risk and the building of resilience to it. Commercial organisations have a key role as corporate citizens, educating staff, stakeholders and shareholders about the importance of sustainability and building resilience into their own systems.

There are four big challenges

  1. Develop a global response to the systemic risks posed by globalisation and new technologies
  2. Reform global institutions and improve public decision-making
  3. Ensure politicians prioritise the right risks
  4. Build an appreciation of systemic risk and boost resilience
