MADE IN MICHIGAN
DRIVES HOLIDAY RETAIL SALES
"Buy American" has become "Buy Local" as more consumers go out of their way to support local businesses in their communities, according to Susan Yashinsky at Sphere Trending.
A survey by the National Retail Federation indicates that local, independent businesses found last year’s holiday sales rose at twice the rate for the
retail industry. Even American Express has jumped on the bandwagon by sponsoring “Small Business Saturday” the day after Black Friday, encouraging people to shop local.
HOW CAN YOU BENEFIT?
-
Independent? Emphasize your
community roots and local ownership.
According to another survey published last month, shoppers deliberately sought out locally owned businesses this past holiday season.
-
Local? You are best positioned to host quick-turnaround, hometown events focusing on the experience.
-
Host an open house with a local artist displaying
your goods.
-
Offer tasting tables, partnering with local restaurants.
- Made local? Tell your customers.
Anecdotally, many consumers would like to know that their product is manufactured locally. A consumer was surprised when she learned that HER new
Jeep was made in Detroit at the Jefferson plant, when a guy who worked on the line asked how she liked her new Jeep.
-
“Buy Local” or “Think Local First” campaigns work.
Give it a try. And check out
"The Detroit Shoppe" at Somerset, which features all Michigan-made products: Faygo, Better Made
potato chips, DIY Coney kits, music, and
more.
