Characteristics of Churches Committed to Developing Cutting Edge Disciples - Part II
Discipling Churches Intentionally Make Disciples In an attempt to better understand the dynamic of growing churches, I've observed some characteristics. A closer look a commitment to:
The Lost & Hurting Discipling people in recovery; from alcohol, drug, tobacco, to other addictions. Their members actively are pouring their lives into hurting and broken people. Children Discipling children through Christian preschools, exciting Sunday school programs, and/or weekly children's ministries and activities-they are bringing children along. Youth More than a gathering place, they are intentionally discipling teenagers for life. Adult Adult small groups are focused on discipling one another. Worship Disciples first and artists second.
Discipleship is about challenging people, accountablity and bringing them along. There is a great difference between a crowd and a congregation. When people sense a movement and empowerment of God, and care enough to disciple, those reached will stay and grow into disciples. Disciples ultimately become disciple makers.
Committed to Developing Cutting Edge Disciples,
Larry

Two Churches Merge
Sunday, August 3 was the first Sunday for the merger of two Hispanic churches. The congregation of Orlando Metro West Hispanic and Pastor Deborah Lugo joined with the congregation of Winter Park Iglesia and Pastor Angel Guzman to form Orlando Monte de Santidad. Pastor Lugo is the Senior Pastor, and Pastor Guzman will serve as the associate. They meet on a beautiful campus on Hiawassee Road. District Hispanic Coordinator Edgar Diaz assisted the two groups with the process.
VBS Reports Are In! Many exciting reports have been received this summer about Vacation Bible School. Kissimmee Iglesia reported 55 children in attendance. Pastor Dennis Jones (Orlando Union Park) says many children accepted Christ during their recent VBS.
Tampa Crosspointe's children's ministries team created "Backstage Pass" -- a movie-themed VBS. Each night was opened by a pair of MC's (in a tux and gown no less) and special entertainment. A movie clip was played and the kids then went to groups and studied an age-appropriate lesson based on that particular night's movie theme and learned a song. There was lots of music, food, games, crafts, and even a "memory fairy" to help them remember their nightly memory verse. A resident 'movie critic' helped them learn about missions. Sunday morning featured a special presentation called "A Night at The Oscars" and each age group presented what they had learned in a song, and were all awarded "Oscars". VBS can be a valuable tool to reach children and their families for Christ.
Child Safety Resources Available
The Children's Ministries section of the Church of the Nazarene website has excellent resources for churches to develop and adopt child safety policies. Visit www.nazarene.org, click on the "children" tab, then "resources."
The Church Triumphant
Thelma Say, wife of retired elder and missionary Paul Say, went home to heaven in July, following a long illness. Funeral services were held at the Ruskin Community Church of the Nazarene. Thelma and her husband served the church as missionaries for 31 years in Mexico, Argentina and the Dominican Republic. Messages of sympathy may be sent to Rev. Say at 1006 124th St., Bradenton, FL 34202. | |
