Baby Basics

Health materials for patients are typically written at the senior high school level, but many of the clients of the  Best Babies Collaboratives  read at a level far below this, meaning that they often struggle to understand the documents they receive on medical visits and can have trouble following written instructions. We also know that limited health literacy is a more powerful predictor of health status and health-related behaviors than race or education (Volande & Paasche-Orlow, 2007).The Baby Basics Prenatal Health Literacy Program  has proven to be an invaluable tool for the Best Babies Collaboratives in meeting this challenge.

Similar in scope and tone to the best-selling "What to Expect When You're Expecting" books, The Baby Basics Program presents prenatal health information at the clients' own reading level and empowers them to take charge of their own health.

Created by the non-profit What to Expect Foundation, Baby Basics (in Spanish, Hóla Bebé) is a curriculum incorporating an easy-to-read book, activity cards, and a planner for tracking prenatal appointments and listing questions to ask of healthcare providers.

The Baby Basics literature relays complex medical concepts, in English, Spanish, and Chinese, at fifth and third-grade reading levels. It also builds literacy by providing a glossary and index and teaching clients how to use them. Clients also learn the vocabulary they need to know at delivery and how to formulate questions to ask providers.

Case managers have a variety of teaching strategies at their disposal, including the teach-back method. For instance the case manager may ask the client to explain exactly what she has understood from her reading, and then fill in the missing pieces for her.

"It's about giving our clients the tools to help themselves," says Maria Peacock, of the San Gabriel Valley Best Babies Collaborative. "When clients understand the information, they become more invested and eager to learn about pregnancy, ask questions and find answers."
