It has been a busy summer and Elder Law Update is back from a three month hiatus. One big change is that we are scaling back activity in Savannah. Kristin Cerbone, my partner, wants to spend more time on family matters, and I-95 is wearing me out. I will continue to work with other attorneys and financial advisors in Savannah, however. In any event, this new arrangement will free me up to spend more time with the folks in North Carolina.

Avoiding A Train Wreck

One of my favorite Winston Churchill stories has him intently watching an aide's child playing with an electric train set. After a few minutes, Churchill yanks his cigar out and says, "Young man, get another train and we can have a glorious train wreck!" Cute story, but it doesn't really have anything to do with this issue's first column other than I thought about it while I was writing the column. I did, however, think a bit of humor might convey a number of important sins of omission that can create horrible results.

Later in Life Second Marriages

On the topic of poor planning, recently I have had a run of client difficulties involving later in life second marriages. While planning for an impending marriage may not seem like a great time to go see a lawyer . . . a trip to the lawyer can head off terrible results later. Once you read the article below, you'll see what I mean.

Thanks for reading! We don't use any canned articles; everything is original and fresh . . . so I hope you enjoy. And please feel free to hit the "Forward" button on the bottom of this email on the left.

LATE SECOND MARRIAGES

Tying the Knot? Or Just Moving In?

A Late Second Marriage
A Famous Late Second Marriage!

Considering a second marriage? For terribly unromantic reasons (I guess I'm the anti-cupid . . . darn lawyer!) you should plan carefully - very carefully - before going into a later-in-life second marriage. The religious prescription not to enter a marriage "unadvisedly or lightly" applies in spades to a later marriage.

"Bob," you may ask, "are you suggesting we see an attorney before the preacher?" And I would answer: "Yes."

Here's why.
