 The Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg
On June 15th, several Place Louis Riel associates went on a tour around the construction site of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, due to open in the summer of 2012.
On this tour we learned about the design, construction and exhibit plans for the new museum, the first large scale new museum to be built in Canada since 1960!
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights promises to be an inspiring international landmark, drawing visitors from around the globe. The CMHR is an innovative and complex structure that utilizes the most up-to-date building technology in its construction - never before used in a project of this scale in North America.
The unique shape and design of the building combines stone and glass to create an iconic structure inspired by the Canadian landscape. The signature architecture of the CMHR was designed by Antoine Predock, a world renowned architect based in New Mexico. The life-changing visitor journey, with a proposed master exhibit plan is by Ralph Appelbaum Associates, the world's largest museum exhibition design firm.

Rent or Strike!....or Dream in Technicolor!
 Rent is Jonathan Larson's Pulitzer-prize winning Broadway musical based loosely on Puccini's opera La Bohème. It follows a year in the lives of seven friends living the disappearing Bohemian lifestyle in New York's East Village. AIDS and both its physical and emotional complications pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom, and Angel; Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble; Benjamin has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends; and Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general, always behind the camera recording the events but never playing a part.
Rent will play at Rainbow Stage from June 21st to July 9th.
 Strike! The Musical is an award-winning social justice drama which has garnered glowing reviews since its premiere in 2005. The historical musical finds its inspiration in the seminal Canadian story: the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike. In addition to regional theatre productions.
Strike! plays at MTYP at The Forks from July 29th to August 4th. Don't miss it!
 The Biblical saga of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph is blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar's wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock 'n' roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat will play at Rainbow Stage from August 3rd to 27th.

Folklorama is still the largest and longest-running multi-cultural event in the world. This year's event showcase runs from August 1 - 14, 2010,
Folklorama begins with a kick-off celebration, July 31st at The Forks. This free event includes a live mainstage show with cultural entertainment, sponsor tents, food vendors and a spectacular fireworks display!
At Folklorama pavilions, you can expect to taste delicious ethnic dishes and exotic beverages, meet friendly volunteers dressed in their traditional ethnic attire, learn about cultures and countries from around the world, and experience dynamic shows that feature world class entertainment. |
 Staff Member Spotlight on ~ Shannon
Shannon German joined the Guest Services Department at Place Louis Riel Suite Hotel in February of this year and has continued working with us as part of her cooperative work term from the Hospitality and Tourism Management Diploma Program at Red River College in Winnipeg.
We are proud to announce that Shannon was the Gold Medal Winner at the 2010 Manitoba Restaurant Skills Competition and went on to become the Bronze Medal Winner at the 2010 National Restaurant Service Competition.
She went into this competition for the experience and along the way learned how it feels to be recognized for her hard work and commitment to improving her skills in her chosen career. Congratulations Shannon on your accomplishments - well done!
Shannon is a positive, upbeat person - great with guests and co-workers. You would never know that despite her approachable, professional service and welcoming smile, she readily professes that she is not a morning person and functions much better in the evenings!
Hospitality is Shannon's chosen career because she loves it, and she is very focused on becoming the best industry professional she can be. And, at Place Louis Riel we count ourselves very lucky that Shannon has chosen to hone and grow her career with us! |
 Jazz Up Your Summer!
An outstanding slate of artists is set to perform at the 2010 TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival. From June 25 to July 4, 2010, downtown Winnipeg will come alive for 10 days of exceptional live music featuring the best local, national and international jazz artists in music today. The festival kicks off with a preview show on June 23 with jazz legend Sonny Rollins.
The Theatre Series boasts an exceptional line-up of acts in 2010 with two mainstage venues: Pantages Playhouse Theatre and the West End Cultural Centre (WECC).
