summer classes
and workshops

June 2010
Hello everyone -

It's been a very busy year so far, with lots of traveling, teaching and learning. I was most recently at the BMCA Conference on Somatic Pedagogy - people from a wide assortment of somatic fields, coming together at Denison University to discuss the fine art of teaching. It was a wonderful conference, full of good company and stimulating ideas.

At The Breathing Project in New York this summer, our immersions will be in August - Leslie Kaminoff and I will each teach a five-day workshop with the overall theme of "Spirals, Knots and Illuminations". Sounds interesting, eh?
I'll also be teaching a six day BMC & Yoga workshop on Muscles in July, with Roxlyn Moret.
Also in July, Alicia Suarez will be offering a workshop at The Breathing Project called "Knee Care - On the Mat and Off". Alicia has been studying with me for several years, and is a lovely teacher with a lot of experience and great ideas to share.

In August I'll travel to teach a workshop on "Embodied Teaching Skills" in California, and one on Developmental Movement at One Tree Yoga in Omaha, NE.

By the end of the summer we should be finished with the second edition of Yoga Anatomy, which is scheduled to be out early 2011 with new chapters, updated information, and my name on the cover. Very exciting - for me, at least.

Then coming up in the fall, Embodied Anatomy & Kinesiology starts up again, with a slightly new format - and a brand new weekly class on EMBRYOLOGY - details on all these classes and workshops are below.

Please feel free to email me at spiralamy@gmail.com with any questions.

Happy summer!

Amy

Organizing Movement:
Patterns & Principles of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation

August 9 - 13, 2010

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation is a therapeutic approach that uses 3-dimensional movement patterns, muscle reflexes and the proprioceptors ("self-sensors") of the nervous system to re-pattern our movement habits. The spiraling movements of these patterns invite our muscles to be active at both their longest and shortest working length, and safely illuminates all the different choices available in each joint.

This workshop is for anyone interested in discovering their own movement habits and/or working with others to find a wider range of choices. In this 5 day workshop we will explore these spiral pathways through the bones, joints and muscles, and the role of resistance in increasing our awareness - which underlies our ability to change.

DATES: August 9- 13, 2010 (Monday - Friday)
TIMES: 8:30 am - 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm
COST: $800 before July 1, $950 after July 1

WITH LESLIE KAMINOFF
Untying, Uniting the Breath: a Multi-Modal Immersion
August 16 - 20, 2010

The key to utilizing the power of our breath is in recognizing and untying the "knots" that obstruct the pathways through which it flows in our system. This is accomplished by uniting the forces of inhaling and exhaling in their wave-like motions through our body.

This week-long immersion is geared towards yoga practitioners and teachers, movement and fitness professionals, hands-on practitioners and voice/performance artists. Drawing from elements both unique and common to all these disciplines, Leslie will lead participants on a multi-dimensional, ever-deepening exploration of their breathing bodies that will leave us feeling freer, clearer and more integrated with our emotions.

There is a registration limit on this immersion, and only participants who are willing to undertake a challenging, transformational process are encouraged to apply. There will be a $50 materials fee to cover the cost of special props that you will keep at the end of the immersion.

DATES: August 16- 20, 2010 (Monday - Friday)
TIMES: 8:30 am - 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm
COST: $800 before July 1, $950 after July 1

BODY-MIND CENTERING
EMBODIED ANATOMY & YOGA WORKSHOP:
The Muscular System
Embodied Anatomy is a deep and internal study of the body where movement is explored through the direct experience of our own body systems, tissues and cells.
In this program we explore each of the systems of the body and their relationship to yoga, taking asana beyond the external form into a profound exporation of our inner vinyasa.

WITH AMY MATTHEWS & ROXLYN MORET
The Muscular System & Yoga
July 11 - 17, 2010

Through the Muscular System we embody our vitality, express our power, and engage in the dialogue of resistance and resolution. The muscles establish a tensile three-dimensional grid for the balanced support and movement of the skeletal structure by providing the elastic forces that move the bones through space.

In this workshop we'll focus our attention on both basic muscle theory (concentric, eccentric, and isometric contractions; reciprocal innervation; agonist, antagonist and synergist roles), and the unique explorations of Body-Mind Centering (muscle puffing; currenting and coupling; discriminating intrafusal and extrafusal fibers; and the proprioceptive initiation of timing).

This workshop is open to everyone, and no previous experience with BMC, anatomy or yoga is required.

DATES: July 11 - 17, 2010 (no class Wed July 14)
TIMES: 9:30 am - 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
COST: $750.00

new classes at The Breathing Project:
Embryology:
The origins of movement
Tuesdays, 6:30 - 8:30 pm
beginning October 26

The study of embryology is an incredibly rich field, with the potential to exponentially deepen our understanding of human structure, movement and function. With a new understanding of the fluid origins of cells, tissues and systems we can transform our experiences of movement and re-pattern our relationships to gravity, the environment and our community in radical ways.

This weekly drop-in class will cover different topics in embryology and will explore various applications to movement. Class involves both discussion and movement - any level of movement ability is welcome, and no previous yoga experience is necessary.

COST: $20

Embodied Anatomy & Kinesiology
2010/11 Skeletal & Ligamentous System
2011/12 Muscular System

Fridays, 1:00 - 3:30 pm
new term begins October 1

This isn't a new class, but the format is expanding to two years - in alternate years we will focus on different systems - in the first year we will focus on the bones, joints and ligaments that provide support, allow movement and transmit weight and force through space. In the second year we will focus on the muscular system and how it creates, modulates and refines our movement choices.

This course travels through the body addressing structure and movement from an experiential perspective, using principles from Body-Mind Centering, Laban Movement Analysis and the Bartenieff Fundamentals, PNF and various yoga practices to discuss principles of alignment and therapeutic applications.

In both years, each trimester covers a different part of the body: The fall session focuses on the spine, the winter session focuses on the lower limb (foot to pelvis) and the spring session on the upper limb (hand to scapula).

Class involves both discussion and movement - any level of movement ability is welcome, and no previous yoga experience is necessary. Each trimester can be taken separately, and the course can be started at the beginning of any trimester. There are no prerequisites for this course - to register, email register@breathingproject.org.

embodied asana classes and workshops are based on sensing your body, breath and movement.
In these sessions we practice bringing
consciousness to each moment of moving.

In embodied asanaclasses you are invited to discover the
anatomical, kinesthetic and energetic relationships
in the body, and between
the body and breath that are at the heart of a somatic practice.
