LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings Everyone!

Spring has sprung and St. Louis is buzzing with activity!

There are so many really fun things going on this month, I hope you all can get out to enjoy them.  In May, we were treated to a month of Vincentennial, the 100th birthday of Vincent Price was May 27th and we celebrated with a month of classic movies at the Hi Pointe, a wonderful display at the Sheldon of posters and memorabilia and many other events around the city.

Last month, we had a great meeting at Bad Dog's new space on Kingshighway.  The people at Bad Dog were the perfect hosts for our camera showdown of Red vs DSLR.  I want to thank our guests, Joshua Lassing, Kyle Krupinski and Jay Kelley.  We learned a lot about these cameras!

Here are a couple events coming up I hope you will check out.

CinemaSpoke is now having their screenplay finalists readings once a month, here is the schedule and location:

June 13: Cesare Venegoni and Paul Ridley's "Breath of Bones"

July 11: Michael Ferguson's "Death or Wichita"
Aug. 8: Tammy Miller's "The Miller Project"

All readings will be held on the second Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Kranzberg Arts Center, 501 N. Grand Blvd. in Grand Center. The Kranzberg Arts Center is located at 501 N. Grand Blvd. at the corner of Olive and Grand (on the ground level of the Big Brothers Big Sisters building). The readings are free and open to the public.

I hope everyone is checking our Facebook page for our special updates.  Next up for local film makers is the annual 48 hour film project, shooting June 3-5!  I hope you have your team ready, we are all looking forward to seeing what our locals are offering up this year.

Next month we have a real treat in store, an entire meeting devoted to Special Effects! We have two terrific guests lined up to teach us how.  First, we have Michael Murdoch from 90 Degrees West who will be discussing set extensions and color compositing and then we have Wyatt Weed presenting a very special workshop.  You can't miss this how to presentation.  If you have ever asked a film maker "how did you do that?" you need to see this.  Wyatt Weed spent 18 years in Hollywood learning the tricks of the trade and he is going to show you how!  You will be amazed and inspired.

Our meeting is taking place next month at Avatar Studios.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

NEXT MCA MEETING - June 15

All too often, the film industry turns to computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create special fx.

MIKE MURDOCH (motion graphics from 90ºWest Studios) will discuss how CGI and Computer Visual FX can change a shot, or make it possible to achieve something that couldn't happen in real life. (www.90DegreesWest.com

Visual FX Supervisor from several Hollywood films, WYATT WEED (Pirate Pictures), will show the MCA audience the "old school" methods of creating something that isn't there. He will show examples of using Blue Screen, Green Screen, miniatures, puppetry, and forced perspective. He will explain how to do effects in-camera, as well as how to use a computer to comp together different images. Locally, Wyatt has helped with or been the supervisor of visual FX on "The Bloodfest Club", "DNR", "Play Dead", "Outpost 13", "Vincentennial promo", "Love Bytes" and "Shadowland." Other films he did visual FX on include "Mission Impossible II", "Muppets from Space", "Guardian of the Realm", "Guyver: Dark Hero" and "Fortress." (www.PiratePictures.net)
