 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

"It's about getting involved" - that is the answer I give when people come to me and ask how they can meet the right people when it comes to the production community in St. Louis. You want to know the people to know?  Get Involved!

Go where the people who do production are, meet them, work with them, let them know you are available.

Get involved in the MCA -- attending the meetings is fantastic, but if you join a committee or join the board, people will know you, not just you knowing them!  When I first joined the MCA shortly after graduating from college, I worked on the newsletter, I was the treasurer, and even though at the time I was still  pretty shy and didn't talk a whole lot (oh, how things have changed) people in the production community started to get to know who I was...and that has helped me through the years.

In 2011, the MCA will have a group of committees that will need people helping out.  If you can give a couple of hours each month to help promote the organization, help update the website, help with newsletter articles, and other things, please contact me (Gayle@Pirate-Media.net) We'd love to have you on the board or on a committee!

AND... don't forget to come out and play!!  Mingling and socializing with the people who do production is another way to get involved!   Be sure to come to the annual MCA Mingle-Fest at our December Holiday Party at Llywelyn's in Webster Groves (see the meeting announcement below). I find that a lot of the real work gets done when disguised as a Happy Hour!

See you there!!
Gayle

NOVEMBER MEETING IN REVIEW

Thank you so much to our panel who joined us on November 10 for the SLIFF Preview Meeting.  It was fantastic to hear from these very different local filmmakers and learn what their experiences have been. The panel included:

Jay Kanzler (director of "Close But No Cigar"),

Vanessa Roman (director of "Play Dead"),

Gary Warren (director of "The Auction"),

Kathy Corley (director of "The Tao of Blake"), and

Rebecca Ormand (director of "Gateway Guardians").

Each presenter also showed us clips from their films and answered a lot of questions from the audience.

It was really great to hear the filmmakers speaking candidly about the processes they went through in creating the projects, but also sharing with us some of the challenges. like really old film for some of the docs, using 'civilians' as camera operators to get into places that a camera crew wouldn't have been able to, getting the rights to television clips, filming in the dead of winter, and figuring out the balance between the writer's vision and the director's vision.

Thank you also to the RAC - this is a really great location.  And a HUGE thank you to AUNT MAX PRODUCTIONS for being our meeting sponsor!

Local Producer Takes Home Award at 46th Annual Chicago International Film Festival

MCA Sponsor Andy Meyer of Aunt Max Entertainment, whose previous job as a flight attendant took him high into the sky, is now reaching for the stars, winning  this year's INTERCOM  Best of Education-Youth Certificate of Merit Award for his pilot television show "Tracking Andy" at the 46th Chicago International Film Festival. Andy traveled to Chicago to attend the CIFF Awards Night Ceremony on October 16, 2010.  Also present was the shows Cinematographer Jordan Lundy.

As a winner in the Intercom category for educational-youth, a portion of Tracking Andy screened at the AMC River East 21 on October 20th as part of Chicago International Film Festivals Best of INTERCOM presentation. And if things couldn't get any better for Aunt Max Entertainment Producer Andy  Meyer, "Tracking Andy" will not only be distributed to all entrants, but also to the festivals list of distributors, educators, potential clients and the press!

Chicago International Film Festival category INTERCOM strives to give recognition of achievement in the corporate, educational, interactive and sponsored productions.

Meyer came up with his idea for "Tracking Andy" while traveling all over the US  serving as a flight attendant.  Each time he landed in a new city, he would discover the most unique and fun attractions of that city. You can also log on to TrackingAndy.com and visit the shows mock up interactive website. The website also is a great tool that teachers can use with their students by uploading and downloading lesson plans to teach in their classrooms.

Rest in Peace, George Hickenlooper

George Hickenlooper, an accomplished film director who first started making movies on an 8 mm camera as a student at St. Louis University High School, was found dead Saturday (Oct. 30, 2010) in Denver. He was 47.

He died in his sleep of a heart attack, said his father, George Hickenlooper Jr., a St. Louis playwright.  "It was a complete shock," his father said. "I don't think he was aware of any health problems."

Mr. Hickenlooper, who lived in Los Angeles, was at a film festival for the première of his latest movie, "Casino Jack," starring Kevin Spacey. The movie, about disgraced Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff, is set to open in December.
