| LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
They say it's not what you know, but who you know.
Although I am not discrediting knowledge, I do agree that who you know can really be helpful, especially in our industry. When I was just starting out in the corporate world, I found my connections in the MCA (then the ITVA) to be priceless. I was straight out of college and felt like I was always being tested by my boss. When I didn't know the answer to a question ("how much will it cost to duplicate this?" "would it be better for us to rent or buy lights?" "what is the best value on software for the type of projects we are editing?") - and at that point in my career, it was often that I didn't know the answer - I was able to turn to the MCA for the answers. I could call the person I had just met at an MCA Meeting, who had been in the industry a lot longer than I had, for some advice. As a kid straight our of school, I didn't have all the answers, but I was smart enough to use the resources around me, and managed to look like I knew what I was talking about when returning to my boss with the information in hand. The connections I have made along the way since then have been so valuable to me, and many of those "connections" are now friends. This month's MCA meeting is about networking and making some friends. It is not the normal structured meeting, but instead more of a "Show and Tell" where you get to show off what you can do, but it is also about getting to know the other media pros in town - you never know when you might need their help, or when they might need you.
