| Social Networking & How to Promote Yourself and Your Business: Next MCA Meeting
When I was a kid, Diggit was the frog on the cereal box (or was that Dig'em?). A new language has emerged with the advancement of social networking sites and there are a lot of benefits to using the sites and the terminology in promoting what we are doing in the industry.
This month's MCA Meeting will focus on using that technology (and all the new odd words that go with it), to promote yourself and your business in the most effective manner.
Our speakers this month are both from The Scorch Agency, a St. Louis company who partners with clients to fuel brand activation with strategic positioning, innovative social media marketing, and customized interactive solutions.
Mike Tomko, Chief Technology Officer
Mike has garnered an incredibly diverse catalog of experiences over the years. In the past decade alone, he has found himself programming and promoting a college radio station, managing recording studios in both St. Louis and New Orleans, writing for national publications and blogs, negotiating recording contracts and touring the country as a musician, managing channel-partner programs for some of the world's largest software companies, and executing several of the areas large scale music festivals and events.
Today Mike is the Chief Technology Officer and VP of Business Development at Scorch Agency, a full-service marketing company based in St. Louis. And, as a guy who never does only one thing at a time, he is also an Adjunct Faculty member of the Webster University Audio Engineering Department and the Lot Festival Chair for Metropolis St. Louis.
Jenn Cloud, Social Media Strategist
Jenn graduated right into the recession with a B.A. in Communications in 2008. Rather than let that inhibit her job search, Jenn was inspired to find a different angle and took her penchant for communicating into the realm of Social Media. Jenn is no stranger to this "Social Media thing." She's been working with interactive web applications since she was an adolescent and her father set her up with a gigantic book on HTML and her first Wacom tablet. Through designing websites on Geocities, downloading music on Napster, and sharing ideas through communities like Xanga and Open Diary, Jenn learned the ins and outs of virtual communication fueled by pure love of the media and then pushing to see what it all could do. (Turns out, it can do a LOT.)
Through Social Media, Jenn has earned the amazing opportunity to work daily with two of the major influencers she became acquainted with through Twitter; Mike Tomko and Chris Reimer. She's excited to now be working in real life with her virtual mentors and considers her experience a tangible homage to the power of social media communication.
At Scorch, Jenn is responsible for the administration of their social media communications, the pursuit and execution of new ideas, project management and filling in wherever she can to help out around the ranch. Jenn is in her element helping to develop and fine-tune the Social Media strategy for Scorch's clients.

Letter from the President: So THAT's What the Kids Are Calling It These Days
Tweeting, Posting, Friending, Updating, Digging, Blogging. How can we keep up? And why would we want to??!?
Isn't Facebook the new MySpace? Isn't Twitter going to replace Facebook? And what the heck is Diggit, anyway?
If you're on any of the Social Networking websites and understand it (my Dad doesn't yet 'get' it) you probably know the woman who changes her update every couple of hours to let you know that she is still bored. Or, you know the guy who posts the link to a new YouTube video of a baby laughing Every Day... Who cares?
Is this the best use of these websites? Is this why my dad doesn't understand why people spend so much time online?
What about using these sites as tools to make our businesses, services and products stronger and more popular? I'm not saying give up on Farmville all together, let's just see what else we can do with the emerging networks on the internet.
THAT is what we will be talking about at our upcoming MCA Meeting -- Social Networking and How to Promote Yourself and Your Business.
As Media Communicators, we should know how to use these sites to their fullest... I will admit, I am already pretty good about Shameless Self-Promotion - I am not shy about telling people about the latest project that Pirate Pictures has in the works (no, I am not going to use this opportunity for a plug -- just yet...) but I, personally, want to know how to promote myself online to keep people interested, and keep them wanting to know more about me and my company -- I don't want to just send them the same link every day and hope that I break them down and they finally check out the latest trailer to my short film so I will stop harassing them.
I want to know if Diggit, and StumbleUpon, and LinkedIn, and all the other sites out there that I have not heard of because I am not 23, are sites I should be using to promote my business and myself and how, how do I use them..?
And, most importantly, how can we get our message out there without it taking half of our day..!
It is a Web, and there is information overload... join us on Wednesday to find out how to make the best use of what is available to us.
(oh, and be sure to join our Facebook Group!)

| May Meeting in Review: The New Hot Sexy Red HD Camera
by: Tierra Gray, Sponsorship Committee
Guess what new hot red sexy item is sweeping the world of film and technology?
The RED camera that captures footage in 3D was the hot topic at the NAB National Association of Broadcasters and the MCA May meeting held at Missouri Baptist University. The hosts of our meeting Jay Kelley of Dreamwelder Productions, Ken Clayton of Avatar Studios, and Glen Wolk of Video Assistance Company informed us about new state of the art cameras in the industry that NAB had on display.
Ray Killebrew at Missouri Baptist University was our host for the evening.
The film industry was initially reluctant to 3D technology because of the need for projectors, but today you cannot watch television for three minutes without experiencing the 3D effect. Today some cameras as small as six pounds feature 3D, and the new RED camera can be customized to include only the necessary features. We seem to be slowly entering a world consumed by 3D.
Although cameras have advanced tremendously, some technologies such as LED lighting, are still popular and common. However, new editing technologies such as the Davinci Resolve, used on the popular Avatar film maybe the future of post-production. The hosts gave their insights on the future of the film industry and said that tapes would be no longer, and there will be a new position during production for handling P2 cards containing footage.
Filmmakers such as directors of photography, directors, and producers could learn from the meeting and panel of hosts who attended the NAB. Who knows where the new technologies will take the film industry? |
