LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENTMCA-i; St. Louis Chapter

The other day, I was on a conference call with the MCA Presidents from around the country. In the meeting, many things were discussed, and what struck me was that other chapters are going through a lot of the same things we are in St. Louis. And I felt better knowing that there was a support team I could turn to when I had questions, concerns or just looking for advice.

When the meeting ended, I realized that what I felt on the call can be translated to the local chapter level.  That each of us as individuals have the MCA as a source to turn to for support, for finding out events that are happening in town, and as a resource for finding local and national production people.

And while the networking at each of the monthly meetings is great, the key is getting more involved, becoming more a part of the team.

The St. Louis Chapter of the MCA is setting up some new committees and we are going to be looking for some help. I know everyone is busy, but being a committee member will help us to spread out the work, and will allow more people to get involved and to see what the MCA is really about.   Initially, we'll be looking for people to help out with the Membership Committee, the Sponsorship Committee, and the PR Committee.

At her first MCA meeting last month, Tierra Gray stepped up and offered to be a part of the Sponsorship Committee (she gets it!) so if you are a business owner, you will most likely be hearing from Tierra in the near future.

Wanna get involved?  Let me know!  I'm waiting to hear from you!

P S - As a preview for one of our upcoming meetings on Social Networking, be sure to check us out on Facebook!  See the link on the left to join the Facebook Group. We are also using this group to post other Media-related events in town, so if you have an even you would like posted, please let me know (and when we grow it enough, maybe we need to start a committee for the social media pages!)
ON LOCATION: How NOT to get arrested on your next location shoot!

Okay... this meeting is not actually going to prevent you from getting arrested, but it will give you the information you need to make sure you know what to do when using a location (permits, insurance, etc), how to cheat an existing location for some place else (did you know you can make St. Louis look like Europe?), and how some simple set dressing can change the appearance of a location entirely.

Whether you are working on films, still shoots, corporate video, or commercials, this is all information you will need.

Our speakers come from different aspects of the production world.

Ron Durham, Location Scout/Manager will give us some tips on what we would need to supply him to help him find the ideal location for our project, and what is needed to legally shoot at different locations. Ron has scouted locations for such productions as THE INFORMANT, UP IN THE AIR, LIGEIA, SAVING GRACE B. JONES, and ALICE UPSIDE DOWN.  (website)

Wyatt Weed, Director of the feature film SHADOWLAND and shorts films WAR OF THE PLANETS and TIMELINE,  will share with us the process he went through in finding locations for these films and others.  He will discuss the challenges of shooting different time periods in St. Louis, of transforming existing locations to make them look like others, and rearranging the geography of the city. (website)

Tuan Lee, local photographer, will share with us his secrets of finding unique locations, and using art direction to give the client a look they want. (website)

March 2010 MeetingMCA March Meeting Review- Overcoming Lighting Obstacles
by: Tierra Gray

Lights, Camera, Action! Weve all heard this phrase, sounds easy right?  Not so much.  That is why I attended the MCA March Meeting about how to overcome obstacles for different lighting situations.  The meeting was held in the spacious studio at Avatar Studios, a place foreign to myself and many other guests.  Avatar Studios is like Hollywood in St. Louis with their modern comfy editing suites and studios all available for rental!

The meeting was jam packed with information about lighting gadgets, tips and suggestions.  David Houlle, owner, operator and Lighting Director of Sight and Sound Productions was the meeting host and set up several lights for various situations.  Candice Jeanine and Josh Thomas, local actors from Azalea Agency, became the subject for our many lighting demonstrations.  Dave explained lighting for day-to-night, opting to block, shoot, then light, as well as lighting equipment and new technology his company Sight and Sound has to offer.  He provided everyone with catalogues for his company which includes price listings.  Also he gave us insight on his professional career as a lighting director in New York and Los Angeles.

If you need to brush up on industry lingo, scouting actors for your next movie or commercial, or simply expand your network, the MCA meetings are the place to be.  As a new member I found the meetings beneficial for students, freelancers, professionals, and those hoping to gain more contacts in the industry.  Hope to see you at next month's meeting in April!

KEVIN KLINE AND CROSS-POLLINATION

by: Mary J. Schirmer

The recent 5th annual Kevin Kline Awards show, named for the veteran stage and screen actor who grew up in St. Louis, was a forum to celebrate outstanding work in St. Louis theater.  However, it was more than that for people in the business of mass communication and entertainment.  The evening of glitter was a precious opportunity to become interconnected.

In attendance were casting directors, actors, choreographers, directors, sound engineers, costumers, lighting experts, composers, independent filmmakers, set designers, screenwriters, producers, talent agents, and more.  The skills that these folks have acquired do translate from the stage to our enterprises in film and video.

St. Louis is a big small town.  We not only can, we should cross-pollinate.  We should become friends and colleagues in a business where networking is almost more important than actual job performance.

For a list of the winners and other nominees, see www.kevinklineawards.org.  Maybe you already know some of these talented people.
