| Letter from the President...
Summer, such that it was, is drawing to a close, but at least the MCA Summer Party is just around the corner, on August 13th, 5:30 pm, at Mike Duffy's in Kirkwood. Don't forget to bring DVDs of your work, just keep the DVD short, so we can show more. The price is also right: Free admittance, Free Food, Cash Bar.
Something else to look forward to is the MCA line up of programing for the fall.
In September, the old "Perspectives on Editing" will make way for the new "Perspectives on Web Design," and we are still looking for more designers who want to show off their skills for a good cause. As with the editing program, we will select a charity to be the beneficiary of the makeover. The designers will need only to redesign the charity's home page and suggest ways in which they would link to and improve the rest of the site. More details are to follow, but please consider stepping up to the plate on this one, and getting some free publicity for your services.
In October, we will have a Makeup program, just in time for Halloween. We will have makeup artists demonstrate how to make up actors and actresses for film, including aging them and making them scary. Sounds like a great time, a fun way to learn how to boast your Halloween costume to the next level, and to practice those all important makeup skills.
In November, we are planning a preview of the films from the Showcase which will also appear in the St. Louis International Film Festival. The Festival dates are Thursday, Nov. 12 through Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009.
And of coure we will be celebrating again at our Holiday Party in December!
One final bit of good news involves St. Louis Cinematheque's website: It will continue and still has the potential to be the best way to market St. Louis as a filmmaking destination.
Sincerely, Sandy Olmsted MCA President, St. Louis Chapter

| Filmmakers' Showcase Winners
by: Sandra Olmsted
Summer wouldn't be complete without the Filmmakers' Showcase, and I want to offer a hardy congratulations to all those who participated in the Showcase. I personally watched half of the films and can honestly say that the films are getting better and better each year. Some of the same problems, such as poor sound quality and music choices, bad casting choices, and using nonprofessional actors, continue to plague films that otherwise show promise. This year there were, however, an especially high number of well-produced, directed, researched, and written documentaries.
Below are the films honored by the St. Louis Critics:
Best Narrative Feature: "How I Got Lost," directed by Joe Leonard Best Documentary Feature: "Paving the Way," directed by Brandon Wade Best Comedy Short: "Ninjas Protest Pirate Festival," directed by Jeremy Corray Best Drama Short Over 10 Minutes: "The Last Legend," directed by Brant Hadfield Best Drama Short Under 10 Minutes: "Playing Dead," directed by Mike Rohlfing & Carey Keane Best Relationship/Romance Short Over 10 Minutes: "Slice of Pie," directed by Tim Reischauer Best Relationship/Romance Short Under 10 Minutes: "And Seven Hours Later...," directed by Lynelle White Best Documentary Short Over 30 Minutes: "William Clark: "The Further Journey," directed by James F. Scott Best Documentary Short Under 30 Minutes (a tie): "Being Born is Marvelous" and "I Always Wanted to Be A Teacher," directed by Denise Ward-Brown Best Animated Short (Computer): "Con Brio," directed by Ben Hill Triola Best Animated Short, (drawn): "Ella Se Cayo De Cada Montana," directed by Jacob Taylor Best Live-Action Experimental Short: "Electrical Storm," directed by Ryan Doris Best Screenplay: Rick Hall for "Slice of Pie" Best Cinematography: "James Freivogel and Cary Norman for When The Body Speaks Best Actor: Rick Hall for "Slice of Pie" Best Actress: Kelley McLeod for "Slice of Pie" Best Score for Documentary: "William Clark: The Further Journey," directed by James F. Scott Best Current Events Subject for Documentary: "Life On The Edge of A Bubble: Blowing the American Dream," directed by William Lewis Best Contemporary Local History for Documentary: "The Rink," directed by Ronald Butts Most Inspiring Documentary: "Continue Courageously," directed by Tom Barry, Bryan Stevens & Suzy Farren
Congratulations to all the honorees and to Tom Berry, MCA Board Member!! |

Mike Ketcher spent July and early August working as Casting Director and Production Coordinator on the feature film, "Logan," a teen drama. Shot on the RED camera, the film features several young actors from the Disney Channel, including Leo Howard, host of "Little Leo's Big Show," who played the title character, Logan. The film also stars Booboo Stewart, a world martial arts champion and former member of Disney's T-Squad, whose credits include "ER," "Blue Dolphin Kids," "Dante's Cove," and other films and television shows. Booboo's younger sister, Fivel, a series regular on "Blue Dolphin Kids" is also in the film. The film, which shot at locations in Arnold, Festus, Imperial, O'Fallon (MO), and St. Louis, featured several St. Louis actors, as well, including Patrick and Christian Probst, Steve Isom, Abigail Isom, Tim Schall, Emily Berry, Paul Lancia, Bart Elfrink, Nicole Cummins, Alyssa Wolff, Dan Schlef, Jerry Russo, Collins Lewis, Charlie Heuvelman, and others, including some 300 extras. Logan was produced by Kyle Lawrence, of Real Bean Entertainment, LLC, a St. Louis area native who now lives in Vancouver, Canada. |
