Greetings!

STLMCA logo
I don't know about you, but 2007 has just flown by.  Not sure where it went to, but it's been a fun and exciting one for me personally and professionally.  I've had a great time watching my baby turn into a toddler, seeing family members get married, taking a few vacations to relax and recharge, serving as your President of the St. Louis MCA chapter, volunteering on other committees where needed, and the biggest ta-da for me was starting my own business and seeing things take off!  It's been a busy year, but one that has brought me much joy.  I hope the same holds true for you.

As I step down as President of the St. Louis MCA and hand things off to Mike Ketcher, I'd like to remind you that we're here for you, so please don't hesitate to let us know what you want and need.  I believe we've had some exciting and successful meetings this year and from looking at the line-up for next year, it looks like 2008 will be just as great, if not even better.  We're always looking for topics that interest you, so if you want something covered, please let us know.  You can contact any of the board members and let your voice be heard.  It's the only way we know what you need and yes - we do listen.  In fact, a few people suggested we hold a workshop on a weekend so that they could get more in-depth information and hands-on experience using certain equipment - well, we're making that happen for you this coming year.  So, as you can see, it really does pay off to speak up and letting us know what you want and need.

I hope each of you had a wonderful year and that the new year brings you much success.  Thank you for allowing me to serve you during the year.

Yvonne Niemann                                                                                                       President; MCA-I, St. Louis Chapter

COME CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS... WITH THE MCA AND IATSE!

by: Mike Ketcher

At the MCA, we're always looking for an excuse to eat, drink, and make fools of ourselves -- and what better time than the annual MCA/IATSE holiday party, which will be Thursday, December 13 at Llywelyn's Pub in Webster Groves (same place as last year).

You can gorge on those delicious little White-Castle-sized hamburgers and the other Llywelyn's delicacies (which will all be FREE!), meet attractive, brilliant people like yourself, and drink.  It's all absolutely, 100% free (except the drinks ... unless you can find someone to buy them for you).

Like I said, you have NO excuse not to be there. This year, as in past years, the party is being co-sponsored by our friends at IATSE Studio Mechanic's Local 493 -- and you know how those folks love to party. So, it'll be a great time for everyone -- we guarantee it (or your money back).

When:
Thursday, December 13, 5:30 PM

Where:
Llywelyn's Pub, 17 Moody, Webster Groves

Directions:
Find your way to I-44.  Take that to the S. Elm Ave. Exit in Webster Groves (going North).  Drive past Big Bend.  Continue on Elm, one block past Lockwood, turn left on Moody, and YOU'RE THERE!  Parking is available on the lot in back or close by on the street.

Cost:
FREE to everyone!!!
November Meeting in Review

by Mike Ketcher

It was standing room only at our November MCA meeting -- a sneak preview of the ATT St. Louis International Film Festival.  Several local filmmakers, who had films in the festival, spoke about their projects -- and filmmaking in general in St. Louis -- and screened excerpts or trailers.

Our special guest, producer Jeff Most, gave his perspective on St. Louis, pointing out some of the strengths of shooting here, as well as areas that could be improved.  He spoke about the tax credit, but expressed disappointment that it had been lowered from 50% to 35%, starting next year.  He's currently in production on a feature film, "Legeia," which is now shooting in St. Louis.  Mr. Most was also producer of "Kingshighway," which shot in St. Louis last May, as well as co-producer of "Ghost Image," one of the hits of the festival.

St. Louisan Jack Snyder, the director of "Ghost Image," was also on the panel.  He discussed the trials and tribulations of shooting a film on a tight schedule with Hollywood actors.  When asked if he had any difficulties with any of those Hollywood actors, he was somewhat evasive, saying that there were some "creative differences," but they were able to work through them.

Jay Kelly, whose short comedy, "Raising the Bar," was also in the festival, talked about his brand new "Red Camera," a new-fangled camera that promises to revolutionize indie filmmaking.  Jay is reportedly the only person in St. Louis who has one of these cameras, although other St. Louisans may have them on order.
There then ensued a debate about film vs. video. Mr. Most felt that a movie shot on film still carried a great deal of cachet, especially in the European market, making it easier to get distribution in foreign markets.  Mr. Kelly felt that for the right project, the Red Camera can't be beat.

Bill Streeter does nothing but digital video, producing Lo-Fi St. Louis, an offbeat, online video magazine that has developed an international audience.  Bill discussed his views on how Internet video is still in its infancy -- and could be a hugely popular and lucrative outlet for film and video distribution in the years to come.

Rounding out the panel was and Emmy- and Telly-award-winning local filmmaker, Jason Christ, who screened an excerpt from his video art piece, "The Quiet Place." Based on the Rebecca Kennebeck poem "Her Soul Flies Free," this film traces the emotional downward spiral of a girl trying to escape the torment of a recent personal tragedy.  Jason also discussed some of the other projects he's involved in, including the horror feature, "Deadwood Park, directed by Eric Stanze and produced by Wicked Pixel films.

All-in-all, it was a wonderfully eclectic demonstration of the breadth of local talent in the St. Louis prduction community.

Channel 10 has scheduled Ray Killebrew  to host a new program.  It is called "Going Like '60" ... a series of 5-minute taped features -- featuring St. Louis area citizens/residents over 60 years of age.  These St. Louis citizens are doing and enjoying what they love to do despite the circumstances of age or health.  These energetic folks continue to contribute their varied talents, making the St. Louis metropolitan area a better place to live, grow, and prosper.  The provocative in-depth interviews deal with business, education, theater, art, and health care.  MCA-STL members will be able to catch these interviews on STL-TV (Channel 10) as a part of Channel 10's new weekly scheduling soon.

Pickett Productions was recently found at Vision Tracks shooting another round of magical Quests and Adventures for the MagiQuest Kingdom. The Kingdom has grown from its original MagiQuest interactive gaming video park in South Carolina,  to now being featured at many of the Great Wolf Lodges around the country, as well as some venues in Japan.  Jeff Pickett and his crew shot the new character, Princess Amora, within a forest scene.  Look closely and you will recognize the Princess as none other than Candice Knight, from the music group, Blackmore's Knights.  Candice gave up her own blonde locks for brunette ones, provided by Makeup and Hair Stylist, Carolyn Parker. After Mike Sneeden directed Candice, with Tom Petrie behind the camera, Mike Eyerman behind the lights and Laurie Trevethan behind the costume, Pickett Productions returned to their own facility and added the special effects and necessary animation.
