Your attendance is needed!

Tomorrow, Wednesday, March 7th, the City Council will hear the "State of the City Report on Historic Preservation - 2012" from the chairperson of the Portland Landmarks Commission. The presentation is set for 9:30 AM and it will include our community-wide concern about the need to reduce the city's high historic design review fees. This fees-issue has stymied the Buckman National Register Historic District nomination and generated major concern in the newer Irvington Historic District as well as other districts. PUBLIC ATTENDANCE is essential to show support - please make every effort to attend the Council meeting at City Hall (1221 SW Fourth Avenue.) The Preservation Report has 45 minutes allocated on the agenda, so plan to be there for the 9:30 start-time.

This Sunday!

Special opportunity to hear Dr. Steven Semes

"Will There be a There, there?"

One of the most challenging issues in new and infill development is how it blends with its more historic neighboring buildings. New buildings don't have to be ultra-modern and overwhelm their surroundings, especially in historic districts. This is a national as well as a local issue and no one has written about it with more authority and strategies to pursue than Dr. Steven Semes, architect, critic, and author.

Semes is coming to Portland for a one-time special event on SUNDAY, March 11, 2012, at 3:00 PM at the U of O/White Stag Building. Don't miss "Will There be a There, there?" as Semes talks about the future of our city!

HPLO LogoPresented by the Historic Preservation League of Oregon, and generously sponsored by Venerable, the Architectural Heritage Center's Cathy Galbraith will be a panelist at this event.

NOTE: Tickets for AHC members are $15 ($20 General Public) and are available online.

Many Thanks to Monthly Givers!

A big thank you to our new and ongoing monthly givers who help keep our financial motor running smoothly throughout the year. Anyone can sign up to help support the AHC every month, whether through your checking account or a credit card, at whatever amount you select. Monthly giving saves you from paperwork and reduces postage and staff time costs for the AHC - which means that more of your gift can go directly to saving the buildings that make our communities our homes. For more information, contact Holly Chamberlain at hollyc@VisitAHC.org or 503-231-7264. Thanks!
