Upcoming Education Programs

Don't miss our final education programs of 2011!

Education Programs

The Visionary Aspects of the Arts and Crafts Movement:

Uniting Design with Nature

Encore Presentation

This Saturday, November 12, 2011

10:00 am - 11:30 am
Members: $10.00     General Public: $18.00

This presentation will examine the International influences that affected the Arts & Crafts Movement. CJ Hurley and Barbara Pierce will illustrate what inspired Arts & Crafts architects to unite their designs with nature and ultimately to "bring the outside in" through structure and decorative details. Along the way you'll learn how Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts were connected rather than separate movements. A special look at the evolution of natural forms will offer a unique perspective on the artists of the day. This well-illustrated program will share historic examples and highlight how the tradition continues today in historic and contemporary homes.

Christmas in November?
Oregon's State Architect William Christmas Knighton

Saturday, November 19, 2011     10:00 am - 11:30 am
Members: $10.00     General Public: $18.00

Education ProgramsFor more than 30 years, William Christmas Knighton (born December 25, 1864), designed fabulous buildings in Portland and the Willamette Valley. His work includes landmarks such as the Governor Hotel in Downtown Portland and the Deepwood Estate in Salem, but he also designed numerous yet lesser known homes, warehouses, schools, hospitals, and even bus depots. We hope you'll join us as Knighton expert, Bob Clay, explores the career of William Knighton and his fantastic architecture, from his commissions during the post-Lewis and Clark Exposition residential building boom of the 1910s, through his service as first president of the Oregon State Architect Examiner's Board and his work as Oregon's State Architect.
