Poetry reading Saturday, September 17th
RSVP's welcome here.
Join us for a riveting visual and auditory experience as visiting author, Susan Alexander Smith, performs a dramatic reading of the poetry CJ wrote to accompany his paintings for Houses, Landscapes, Flowers & Dreams.
Doors will open for viewing the art at 10:30am. Reading begins at 11am. This will be an interactive and engaging reading that will make you look at the art in a whole new way. We expect the event to last about an hour. CJ & Susan will be present to answer questions and talk to attendees after the performance.
S. Alexander Smith is a novelist, actor, librarian, and founding member of Buffalo's Hag Theatre. Her books include novels "Of Drag Kings and the Wheel of Fate", "Burning Dreams" and novella "Billy Boy". Based in Buffalo NY, she is visiting Portland to perform this reading and to participate in the filming of a documentary video on CJ Hurley and his art. If you are a fan of Susan's books, bring your copies and she will be happy to sign after the reading!
Lecture and Artist Talk - Romanticism: Its legacy and connection to the art of CJ Hurley
Thursday, September 29th 6pm
In his presentation, CJ will discuss the Romantic Movement including Art, Poetry and Fiction. He will offer his insight into Romanticism's continuing presence in the modern world. CJ sees Romantic thought as an essential part of being human and has a special regard for Romanticism's position regarding nature. Auction Donation Highlights
16th Annual "Riches of a City" Heritage Auction
Saturday, October 15th
Wonderful treasures are waiting for your bid at the auction. Of course, we want to tempt you and we're giving you ample time to plan your strategy. Most items will be available for your inspection at the auction, but we have a special donation that is available now for private viewing and bidding. Take a look:
If you are interested in viewing this beautiful harpsichord, please contact Ita Lindquist, 503-231-7264, for more information and to arrange a time. This donation will not be present at the auction; it is a one-of-a-kind treasure for the discerning collector. Make it yours!
Get your GOLDEN TICKET before they're gone!
Our new golden ticket raffle offers one winner the opportunity to select from live auction items BEFORE anyone else. Imagine, for the price of one ticket, $50, you might win a trip to Mexico or Arizona, or a beautiful beach vacation. Maybe you'd like to have professional design work for your home, or perhaps your wood floor needs to be refinished. We will sell only 100 tickets for this exciting raffle. Once they're sold, a name will be drawn at the auction and the lucky winner will select a fabulous prize. Don't wait -- double your luck and buy two tickets!
Donations - We are still accepting tempting items with a minimum value of $50: beautiful furniture, art work, collectibles, gift certificates, vacation packages, fine wine, and more. Our donation deadline is September 23, so the time to make that donation is now!
Sponsor our auction - it's easy to do and it supports our biggest fundraising event. There is a sponsorship level right for your business or organization. Give us a call.
Tickets for the auction are on sale now on our website, at Tickets, or call to arrange for a table. If you have questions about donations, sponsorships or tickets, contact Ita Lindquist, Events & Volunteer Manager at ital@visitahc.org or 503-231-7264.

Virtual Collections Tour Available for AHC Visitors
AHC visitors can enjoy a virtual tour of our extensive array of architectural artifacts at a computer station in the main lobby. Safety concerns and staff availability limit visitation to our storage warehouses but technology provides access to a broad overview of the range of items collected by founders Jerry Bosco and Ben Milligan, and those given to the organization by later donors. More items are constantly being added to the database, so be sure to take a look even if you have "clicked" before. Many thanks to all the volunteers who have helped catalogue and photograph artifacts over the years, and enter the data so that the information is available for all.

Help us spread the word!
Help us spread the word to all of the people in Portland who love old buildings, history, good education, exhibits, and more. We know all of you are loyal supporters of the AHC, but you wouldn't believe how many people out there don't know about us!
Ways you can help:
- Tell your friends and neighbors about our programs and events. Bring them with you the next time you visit.
- Write a review about us on Google Places
- Write a review about us on Yelp
- If you carry a mobile device and use foursquare, check in at the AHC every time you visit. If you are a regular volunteer or board member, "check-in" each time and compete to become the "Mayor"!
- Volunteer to help us hang posters and distribute postcards for special events to library branches, coffee shops and retailers in your neighborhood.
