 Volunteer Spotlight

Accomplishments at the AHC are often all about great people working hard towards a common goal.  This week's spotlight is on...

Morgen YoungPreservationist, Morgen Young has a B.A. in History from Furman University and a Masters in Public History from the University of South Carolina.

Her current work focuses on the documentation and preservation of history.  Architectural Historic Preservation combines Morgen's interest in history, her care in sustainability and her desire to work with something tangible - buildings and architecture.

After living in diverse places such as Panama, Alaska, Venezuela, Italy, and the American Southeast, Morgen settled in Portland for its "relaxed attitude and sense of sincerity." She enjoys this progressive city where so many people are aware and participating in the community - Morgen is a great example of this, splitting time between her career and volunteering at various organizations, including the Architectural Heritage Center. She is on the HPLO Endangered Places Task Force and is part of the Century of Action, working on the 100 years of women suffrage in Oregon.

Morgen has been a volunteer at the AHC since 2009 and is currently the Chair of the Education Committee and a member of the Kitchen Revival Tour Committee.  One of her goals at the AHC is to help reach out to a more diversified age group, to engage other generations, specifically college students. In regards to historic preservation, she wants to change the mentality that a building becomes frozen in time, and that the adaptive reuse of buildings should be a vital part of current design practices.  For her, preservation "is just as much about modernity as it is about history - it's the evolution of a building."

Morgen is the Owner and Consulting Historian for Alder.  Alder offers consulting in history-based projects at the local, state and national level. Her expertise includes exhibit curation, corporate, property and family history research, and nominating properties to the National Register of Historic Places.

The AHC is lucky to have Morgen on our team of active volunteers.  She can be seen in the building working on various projects on any given day and gives an amazing amount of her time and knowledge to our education efforts.  THANK YOU Morgen!

Sustaining Contributions

Did you know that you can support the AHC on an ongoing basis by signing up to have a monthly contribution from your checking account or your credit card? No muss, no fuss, and hardly any paperwork. A very "green" solution which means that all of your contribution can go towards saving the buildings you love. Your sustaining donation can begin at any time that works for you, be in any amount of $5.00 per month or larger, and will help provide a predictable base of month-to-month operating funds that are so greatly needed. Call or email Holly Chamberlain for more information at 503-231-7264 or hollyc@VisitAHC.org.

Thanks very much!

 QUOTES & FACTS

"My connection to the past, like any Historian's, is through the stuff that's left behind. It's not an imaginative connection, although imagination is part of it. It's about documents, it's about sources, it's about clues, it's about the leavings, the shards, the remnants of people who once live and don't live anymore. Without the documents, there's no history..."

- Laurel Thatcher Ulrich

Does your employer match gifts?

Many companies double or even triple gifts to non-profits...including membership dollars! The AHC's parent company, the Bosco-Milligan Foundation, is already registered with a number of companies as a recognized non-profit, and we are happy to do so with more. Check with your employer's human resources or community involvement office to find out if you have access to a matching program. For not much paperwork, you can make your gift to the AHC go even farther! Thanks!
