The Portland Plan

Historic Preservation and The Portland Plan
Please mark your calendars and plan to attend two very important symposia on Historic Resources.

#1 FRIDAY, May 20th, 9:00AM - 12:00 Noon
1900 SW 4th Avenue (City of Portland Development Services building))

#2 FRIDAY, June 17th, 9:00AM - 11:30AM
1900 SW 4th Avenue (same location)

The intent of these sessions is to identify historic preservation policy issues, from the views of important stakeholders including the Landmarks Commission, property owners and developers, preservation advocates, including our own Executive Director Cathy Galbraith, and others. This will take place at Session #1.

Session #2 will present the findings from the first session, with the objective of arriving at Historic Preservation Policy documents for inclusion in the Portland Plan. This is our opportunity to define the Portland's future for historic preservation.

A great turnout is absolutely essential. Check back to our website for more detailed announcements.

Sustaining Contributions

Did you know that you can support the AHC on an ongoing basis by signing up to have a monthly contribution from your checking account or your credit card? No muss, no fuss, and hardly any paperwork. A very "green" solution which means that all of your contribution can go towards saving the buildings you love. Your sustaining donation can begin at any time that works for you, be in any amount of $5.00 per month or larger, and will help provide a predictable base of month-to-month operating funds that are so greatly needed. Call or email Holly Chamberlain for more information at 503-231-7264 or hollyc@VisitAHC.org.

Thanks very much!

 Business Member Spotlight is back!

AHC Business Members provide products and services pertinent to historic preservation and period-authentic restoration, and they support the mission and goals of our organization.  Please consult the Resource Directory on our website and patronize these businesses first when you need professional services for your home projects and when you are looking for great cultural places to visit.

Spotlight:

Art First Colors owner, Mary McMurray finds the right colors to help people achieve their goals: to feel more energized; more peaceful; to discover original paint colors; or to create a beautiful new color palette to suit their taste. It is her passion to bring out the innate beauty in all buildings, whether historic or contemporary. Her clients love that she interprets their desires in unexpected, knowledgeable, and happy ways.

We asked Mary why she is a business member of the AHC and what the AHC means to her.

"Eighteen years of helping the Bosco-Milligan Foundation uphold our indispensable architectural heritage have been such a memorable and rewarding experience that I will be an everlasting member of the AHC. I'm delighted that, one year, the Kitchen Revival Tour featured two homes for which I was the design consultant. I have led workshops benefiting the AHC on decorative painting techniques and given pictorial presentations on the history of colors in design. The people I meet through the AHC are treasured because we share heartfelt values for knowledge, history and architectural wonderment."

Become the Mayor of the AHC!

Help us spread the word to all of the people in Portland who love old buildings, history, good education, exhibits, and more.  We know all of you are loyal supporters of the AHC, but you wouldn't believe how many people out there don't know about us!

Ways you can help:
  • Tell your friends and neighbors about our programs and events.  Bring them with you the next time you visit.
  • Write a review about us on Google Places
  • Write a review about us on Yelp
  • If you carry a mobile device and use foursquare, check in at the AHC every time you visit. If you are a regular volunteer or board member, "check-in" each time and compete to become the "Mayor"!
  • Volunteer to help us hang posters and distribute postcards for special events to library branches, coffee shops and retailers in your neighborhood.
 QUOTES & FACTS

"These old buildings do not belong to us only, they belong to our forefathers and they will belong to our descendants unless we play them false. They are not in any sense our own property to do with as we like with them. We are only trustees for those that come after us."

-William Morris

Does your employer match gifts?

Many companies double or even triple gifts to non-profits...including membership dollars! The AHC's parent company, the Bosco-Milligan Foundation, is already registered with a number of companies as a recognized non-profit, and we are happy to do so with more. Check with your employer's human resources or community involvement office to find out if you have access to a matching program. For not much paperwork, you can make your gift to the AHC go even farther! Thanks!
